I remembered the following beautiful hymn by St. Ephrem the Syrian (4th century).

The Lord is a wise giver. He looks at the benefit of the petitioner, and as soon as he sees that what he asks is harmful, or at least useless to him, he does not fulfil the request and refuses the imaginary benefit. He listens to every prayer, and he whose prayer is not fulfilled receives from the Lord as much a saving gift as he whose prayer is fulfilled.

Whether a needy or a debtor come to the Good One, he will give to the former and he will forgive the latter. Therefore, both depart from the door of the Giver with gifts: the needy receives deliverance from the need, and the debtor – the abandonment of the debt.

In all possible ways God shows that he is a gracious giver: he gives us his love and shows us his mercy. Which is why he does not answer any wrong prayer, the fulfilment of which would bring us death and destruction.

However, even in this case, by denying the requested, he does not leave us without a very useful gift; for the very fact that he removes from us the harmful, he already opens for us the door of his generosity.

Be assured, therefore, that every petition which is not granted is certainly injurious; and that petition which is heard is beneficial. The giver is just and good, and he will not leave your petitions unfulfilled, because In his goodness there is no malice, and in his righteousness there is no envy.
