It says in Hebrews chapter 2:
> For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
> How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
> God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
God is a just God. He will by no means clear the guilty (Exodus 34:7). This is also something we love about Him, because He is righteous. He doesn't just let people do whatever they want and eternally get away with it. That would be unjust. Since man is unable to pay for or make up for the damage of his sins against the Lord, the only possible thing that could be returned or repaid for that sin is death. As it says in Romans 3:23, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
So then it is seen that, while the only way that sin (which resulted from the fall of man) could be repaid is death, God also sent His only begotten Son in order to pay that price for us through His blood. God in His infinite mercy had sent His only begotten Son to live and die on earth simply to suffer in our place, as it says, so that no man would need to go to hell. As it says in Hebrews again, "without shedding of blood is no remission." But if we neglect that great salvation, which is a possible choice by resisting what Christ said and not accepting it, then we are left with the only option which is to simply fail to meet the perfect standard God has set out by His law, and have to die alone in our own sins. Try as much as we can, we are all imperfect and do sin. It is a doomed endeavor to try to keep the entire law of God without Christ. As it says in James 2:10, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." Only Jesus Christ is perfect. As it says of Him in Hebrews, Jesus is "holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;"
It also says in Galatians 3:22, "But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe."
With all this said, and in view of all the teachings given by Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry, before He ascended into the heaven where He is today at the right hand of God, it is known from Scripture that we should, if we would be wise, gladly receive the word of God about Christ, and be saved from the penalty of sin which was already once paid on the cross of Christ, or else if we neglect such a great salvation, there is only one thing waiting for us which is the due penalty of eternal damnation in hell. This would be what will happen if any one rejects our Savior. It is only justice, as we have sinned. And finally as it says in 2 Peter, "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:"
Rather than rejecting what our Lord did by denying the word of God, we should take this precious time in our lives that God has provided for us, delaying His judgement for our sins (while we were still sinners, Christ died for us), to be reconciled to God and restore our standing in God's eyes. As it says in 2 Corinthians 5:19, "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation." The Lord God looks on a man or woman's faith in Jesus Christ and imputes righteousness of God on their behalf. See Romans 4:3-8 for more on that. This is what we find written in the word of God, the Bible. It behooves us to accept - with joy, and trembling, and fear of God - the record that God gave of His Son. As it says in 1 John 5:10, "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son." Hopefully that all explains a bit more about why eternal conscious suffering exists.
>20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
>21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
- 2 Corinthians 5:20-21
