Clearly I am not going to read all of the Church fathers writings any time soon, so what writings should I start with?

No church history:

Man points a rosy picture of his history, e.g., queen of heaven (Jeremiah 44:2-6,9-10,15-23; Matthew 23:29-33 KJV).

Church history is corrupt from the beginning (Ezekiel 20:17-18 KJV).

The Jews thought they were saved because Abraham was their physical father (John 8:39 KJV).

The Samaritan woman relied upon church history to tell her where to worship, and she was wrong (John 4:20 KJV).

Those appealing to the fathers live in sin like their fathers (Acts 7:51-53 KJV).

In fact, religion makes a new generation worse than the previous generation (Jeremiah 16:10-13; Matthew 23:15 KJV).

No traditions:

The Jewish religion had cancelled out the word of God with their traditions (Mark 7:3-13 KJV) and was an empty life (I Peter 1:18 KJV).

When Paul was saved, he abandoned Jewish traditions for the Word of God (Galatians 1:11-17 KJV).

Men's traditions can spoil you so that you are not effective in the body of Christ (Colossians 2:8-9 KJV) and beguile you of your reward (Colossians 2:18 KJV).

Apostasy happens quickly:

>"The churches of Asia salute you" (1 Corinthians 16:19 KJV)

vs.

>"All they which are in Asia be turned away from me" (2 Timothy 1:15 KJV).

I'm not very knowledgeable on it to provide a reading list, i have only read a few so far.

I'm currently reading St.Gregory of Nyssa 'The life of Moses'. It starts by doing a summary of the events, and then goes on to explain the spiritual significance and symbology of every little event and object. It's a wonder to crack open the bible because the same patterns are recurrent.

Cant go wrong with St.Augustine's confessions. Also 'the city of God against the pagans' shows nothing is new under the sun, as he describes the self castrated effete worshipers of Cybele parading in the streets with make up, ring a bell? The cybele demon worshippers are doing the same today and its state enforced.

St.Justin Martyr first apology addressed .Antoninus Pius and MArcus Aurelius (which he calls verissimus) is interesting because at a certain point he describes the mass and the importance of the Eucharist. His lambasting of the pagan gods is also funny taking into account he was writing to pagans, no wonder the apologetics didnt work and they cut his head…

From what I can tell, Justin Martyr would be a good start, seeing as he was fairly early on in church history. That being said, I haven't looked that much into the Church Fathers, so don't take my words as gospel.

The entire Ante-Nicene, Nicene and Post Nicene library can be found free here: https://ccel.org/fathers

I would suggest these in particular:

<Ante-Nicene

<Vol 1

>The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians (1 Clement)

>The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians

>Iranaeus "Against Heresies"

Against heresies is very long, made of many books. Read some chapters then skim to see if there's a chapter that might interest you

<Vol 2

>The Pastor of Hermas (aka Shepherd of Hermas)

>Origen "Against Celsus" (aka Contra Celsum)

<Nicene and Post Nicene

>Augustine "Confessions"

Long, feel free to skim

>Chryssostom "Treatise Concerning the Christian Priesthood"

>Gregory the Great "Book of Pastoral Rule"

In honesty reading the fathers is challenging, but the editor's introductions really help to give the gist and why it matters. There's also modern books which are basically abridged versions

Embedded is a great lecture that contextualizes the apostolic fathers

Also read the didache

Saint vladimirs seminary press has a "popular patristics series" which you could consider as a guide to what's seen as the most relevant, at least to readers

what can i say, it's been a long lockdown :3

nah, truth be told i'm 1689 Confessional, very appreciative of what's come out of the SBC, and recognise Critical Theory as an outworking of the spirit of antichrist, so when the Founders stood up to Resolution 9; you had my axe
