Finished re-watching fma:b yesterday. I've got no idea where the "God is truth" meme comes from. It's a visual representation of pride, or perhaps of Satan, that's present in everyone.
It reflects the individual vs man being shaped in God's image (as we see in it's shape in the conversation with Dwarf in the Flask), and the black hands are a consistent visual metaphor of pride, and the arrogance in reaching beyond one's lot.
Every time the "Portal of Truth" is opened by arrogant alchemists looking to go against the natural order they are struck down and punished by this grinning monstrosity. In the case of Mustang, who was the only individual to have been cast through the portal. It seemed to me like his loss of eyesight was a test. It was temporary, reinforced the fact that the wrathful eyes that he'd worn vs Envy were not fit for a leader, and when he was humbled his sight was restored in the end. It was ultimately Father who opened Mustang's portal, via the homunculus Pride, and we see the price he pays for his arrogance in the end.
Furthermore, when Edward casts aside his portal; his pride as an Alchemist and acknowledges that he has only ever been a "mere human" the """Truth""" acknowledges "that's the answer", and crumbles to dust. This reinforces the idea that """Truth""" is a test, and in Edward's humility against his pride he restores his lost brother.
While I don't think that fma:b is a particularly good exploration of Sin broadly, and it doesn't seem to be a particularly Christian show. I do like it's representation of """Truth""" as a prideful, Satanic creature. Anything in the show that equates itself with God is ultimately evil.
Off topic though, so sage goes in all field.
