We know that God loves us with an "everlasting love," (Jer 31:3). We know that God works all things towards our good (Rom 8:28). Because He loves us, he laments at our suffering, yet all of the turmoil that this virus causes will be worked toward our benefit.

Yet there are many instances of God saying that he will protect us from harm if we trust in Him. Where is the line between using the prevalence of evil for our good and saving us from that evil?

He either gives it to you or gives you something better. Given that he's an entity with a knowledge of everything out there, he know what is best for you.

If you truly desire it, then you have to work for it.

I think that is a wrong conception of what a prayer should be, the whole idea is to differentiate what you desire and what is actually good for you. Usually in my own prayers, no matter what may be troubling me, or whatever desire I be going through, it usually ends up in acceptance like.

Keep in mind that he has made all of his followers (Moses, David, etc) struggle for a goal that they were on the verge of giving up on. It's likely he does it with the intention of strengthening character.

Like what?

Don't confuse promises made to a certain group at a certain place and time, or promises about ultimate salvation in the form of eternal life.

In fact we have the opposite of a promise of protection:

2 Tim 3:12
