One problem that certain allegedly "christian" sects like Jehovah's Witnesses have with church doctrine is surrounding the immortality of the soul and our heavenly destiny.

When questioned on this, the JW will say "Why were we created on Earth if we were meant to be in heaven? Why not just create us in heaven to begin with?"

This is the usual theme with the JW cult - humanize everything, minimize the spiritual, anything that doesn't make immediate rational sense must be false.

How would you respond to this objection in a way that they can understand? (Remembering that their spiritual/church/historical knowledge is extremely stunted)

They could just ask why we were created in the first place, why God even bothered. The thing is, we may be meant to be in heaven, yet few will make it. The vast majority of us will fail, and by our own choice.

The main problem of the JW, like most protestant sects, is their idolatry of the Bible. They regard it, literally, as the word of God. First there's the fact that the Bible was compiled through tradition, yet they disregard the rest of that tradition. Secondly, you have the issue of the Bible being written in human language, and who could human language contain the full divine message?

Speaking as a long-since-former JW decades ago, there's no idolatry happening because there is no worship - not even to the level of sola scriptura. That's flatly the wrong term to be using.

That aside, their response there is that God guided the hand of the early church by way of holy spirit when the canon was compiled, bringing holiness out of evil as is done so many times.
