I wanted to ask if some of you here are Orthodox. And if so, did you convert? And why did you think the Orthodox Church was right? And what version of Orthodoxy are you? Russian Orthodox?

Pic unrelated

I am a convert. I converted to Orthodoxy because after reviewing the ecumenical councils and Church Fathers etc. I believe that the Orthodox understanding of the primacy of Rome in the early Church is true. I see the Papal dogmas of Vatican 1 and others as contradicting with the actions and statements of the early Church.

If you want to know why I abandoned Protestantism in favor of an Apostolic faith than thats a different matter entirely.

Baptized Orthodox as a child. Didn't really believe or go to Church often until recently.

Thought intensely about other denominations. Turns out I was in the correct one all along.

Why even post this? How do you insult someone into converting?

Do you know this anon? Do you know for a fact that he's never read vatican 1? No you don't, but you still make baseless accusations. But instead of asking him what specifically he disagreed about with vatican 1 in order to create a dialogue you created insults and slander. Well done.

I'm an Orthodox convert, I was baptized last year. I wasn't consciously looking to join the church but I was interested by what little I had seen of Orthodoxy and there was a nearby parish that I wanted to check out. Once I finally made it to a service, I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to keep going back. I became a catechumen before too long and was baptized a year later.

went to one catechism class then got sick and gave up but now i'm not in a hurry to get baptised

if i find a fiancé we can do catechism classes and get baptised together

orthodox church is The Church that was established by Jesus Christ and you just have to look at history to confirm it

I was baptized in the OCA this year. I have been going on and off for the past 3-4 years. Grew up irreligious. Made more sense than Catholicism regarding the Pope, the Church, the Priesthood, and the Deaconite.

The biggest deterrent to Catholicism wasn't any of these points for me, but the assertion that Latin is the language of the Lord that is incredibly common in the more traditionally minded Catholics. I've heard the argument " it's good because it's a dead language so the meaning of words can't change" used seriously before. It's more in line to believe that the rites would be performed in the native tongue (as every other Church did before the schism). The Church should reflect the nation it nurses, this means extolling its virtues, working through their vices, and bringing the good traditions into it. It should also offer services in their tongue. A prayer you don't understand is meaningless. I would've become Anglican, but the more I compared the two I could not help but think that the Anglicans should have turned Orthodox.

The Orthodox Church is not without error throughout history, no church could ever claim to be spotless the sect of Catholics who try desperately to defend everything they teach and have taught us particularly annoying, but so to do the Orthodox find that with Moscow. I feel as if I'm one of the few who do not like the Russian Church all that much. The politics involved there over-ride the Truth at times and that's the same attitude that gets us into trouble.

Former (cradle) Catholic, just became an Orthodox catechumen this year, but still in the process of converting. This was a direct result of studying for myself the doctrines of all the major denominations, Judaism, much early church history, and a lot of the church fathers, over the course of a couple years. Basically, I realized that the RCC didn't live up to its unique claims, and that Orthodoxy not only had a better system ensuring stability/survival, but also proved it by managing to maintain the most continuity with the original Jewish traditions. Meanwhile, Protestantism was interesting in its own way, but misrepresented early church history too often to be taken seriously.

I didn't even mention which traditions I was talking about for you to be jumping to such lazy conclusions. I've read Pitre's books already. I trust St. John Chrysostom more.

>4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

>5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

>6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

>7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

>8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

>9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

>10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

>11 Cretans and Arabs–we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."

Orthodox conception of God is the only one that makes sense to me. A resolution of the simplicity and multiplicity of the creator explained by the essence energy distinction. Catholics and Protestants think of God as just a giant monad blob at which point you may as well be a perennialist (as I used to be before discovering the true religion)

I'm Orthodox. I converted and am currently a catechumen with the OCA, so Russian/American. I probably first heard about Orthodoxy (and noticed it) here. I remember being impressed by one Orthobro detailing the doctrine of hell. He was incredibly calm and the post was filled with such a wisdom that I couldn't ignore it. When I accepted Apostolic Succession as, you know, a good thing, I began to discern between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. (I felt very drawn to the Theotokos at this time, bless Her.) It was ultimately the historical argument and the impression I got from reading that one anon's post and the other Orthodox theology I had read around here. And so I begame.
