Hello /christian/, I've been listening to the bible lately on Youtube and I have a couple questions. Specifically, early in the Bible before it gets to Jesus and all that it goes over the names of people and their family lineage in meticulous and one might say excruciating detail. It also goes over numbers for…something? in a chapter specifically named Numbers.

Can someone explain to me why these things were so important to record?

How much relevance does it hold today? Should I just skip to Jesus?

The thing about the Old Testament is that it is not only just a book full of wisdom, but also a historical record of the accounts of the children of Israel. All the names are very important because it traces a lineage. That lineage is very important because God uses it in His prophecy. He promised is King David that a great Redeemer will be hailed from his line (ie Jesus). It's how Israel knows that the person God sent is 100% legit and not some Pretender.

As for the significance of the numbers in the Book of Numbers, it literally is a historical record of everyone in the tribes of Israel.

But please do not skip over the Old Testament it contains valuable information. Skipping over the Old Testament is like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the peanut butter.

>He promised is King David that a great Redeemer will be hailed from his line (ie Jesus).

So Jesus is a decedent of King David?

Ok I'll stick with it. I really want to know and understand the Bible and Christianity better and give Faith a real shot but it's hard…it's not written to entertain and I understand that but with so many distractions in our world now who has time for dry flowery language about historical accounts or abstract metaphors?

Anyway thank you for explaining it was something I really wanted to know before continuing my attempt to read/listen to the Bible.

> so Jesus is the descendant of King David?

He sure is. The only way Jesus was able to be a part of that lineage is through his Blessed Mother the Virgin Mary.

> I want to give Christianity a shot but it's hard

Jesus never said it was going to be easy, lol.

From what I was taught about the Bible especially the Old Testament, is that you should treat it as a sort of meditation literature. You read it and then reflect on your life and how it affects you and how you could conform your life to what is taught in the passages.

Soon enough once you get to the New Testament in Jesus starts talking in parables, you'll understand why God isn't just so direct with everything.

I mean God was direct with everything when he created the laws, but even then their were those in Israel that still disobeyed.

Matthew opens with the geneaology of Christ tracing all the way back to Abraham "The father of many nations". Following from Genesis, Abraham is the 10th descended from Noah, and Noah himself was the 10th descended from Adam. This makes Christ the ~61st descendant of Adam. It's a point of legitimizing and fulfilling the prophecy in Jeremiah of the Messiah. There are discrepencies between Matthew and Luke in their genealogies, and the reasons are very interesting.

It can be rough to read the old testament, but the books there were chosen because they are cited or referenced at some point in the New Testament except Sirach and the other "extra-canonical", which have been removed despite their reference.

A better method of reading is to start with the New Testament, Reverse Gospel Order (John, Luke, Mark, Matthew) then Acts, then the letters. Then go back and read the History Books of the OT. It will make more sense from a Christian perspective. Studying the Psalms and Proverbs are good too. The prophets are some of the more engaging books of the Old Testament. Jonah and Job are particular favorites.

If you're reading the Bible for the first time you should really start with the New Testament.

The old testament is worth reading for sure, it gets better. I'd have to second what this guy >>816755 said about the order that you should read the Bible. I myself didn't read the gospels in reverse order, I just read straight through the new testament first and I think that helped me go back through the old testament (I'm in Ezekiel right now).

>Jesus never said it was going to be easy, lol.

Yeah I understand. But understanding and actually taking the time to read/listen are two different things heh.

>I mean God was direct with everything when he created the laws, but even then their were those in Israel that still disobeyed.

Speaking of which I am far from even an intermediate understanding of the Bible so maybe this makes more sense the more you take in but it seems like the God of the Old Testament is a lot more….human than in the New Testament. He gets angry and he wants to be worshiped (a jealous god is an actual line right?). That kind of stuff isn't really in the New Testament is it? Isn't he more aloof and divine?

Ohhh ok when you put it that way and condense it all it's so much easier to understand.

>Studying the Psalms and Proverbs are good too.

I actually forgot how far I got because I stopped for awhile but I did really enjoy Psalms and Proverbs as well. Seems like there is a lot of good information that's fairly easy to understand in almost every line.

I might try this since I don't remember where I was in the Old Testament anyways.
