That's a meme. The average lifespan was in the 50s due to high infant mortality rates dragging it down. If you lived past the age of 10, you were likely to live into your 60s or 70s.

This theory goes that Joseph was a widower, who had already been married and had children, and that he agreed to marry Mary to protect her.

I didn't know about that, though it certainly sounds likely. I'm talking about the possibility of an assumption of Joseph though, which is also something which many theologians have argued for over the years.
