The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What do you think happened to Joseph?

He died of old age before Jesus turned 33.

Like the first poster said, he likely died of old age sometime between the first visit to the temple and Jesus beginning his ministry.

One of the interpretations of Jesus having brothers and sisters in the scriptures is that Joseph was a widower who brought children into that new marriage. That would mesh well with him dying of old age well before Mary.

What do you guys think of the theory that Joseph was assumed into Heaven, body and soul, just like Mary was?

Why do you think he would have been old? I prefer the idea of young Joseph… In that time, most people lived into their 50's. Why would he get married (and, to the most beautiful woman ever) at such an advanced age? Israelite men got married in their late teens/early twenties. It just doesn't make sense, since they may not have seen their children come of age if they're 30+.

Amen.

I believe some theologians believe that Joseph was sanctified the same way John the Baptist was, in the womb. (But he was conceived with original sin, as all people except the Virgin Mary and Jesus were.)

>In that time, most people lived into their 50's.

That's a meme. The average lifespan was in the 50s due to high infant mortality rates dragging it down. If you lived past the age of 10, you were likely to live into your 60s or 70s.

>Israelite men got married in their late teens/early twenties.

This theory goes that Joseph was a widower, who had already been married and had children, and that he agreed to marry Mary to protect her.

>I believe some theologians believe that Joseph was sanctified the same way John the Baptist was, in the womb

I didn't know about that, though it certainly sounds likely. I'm talking about the possibility of an assumption of Joseph though, which is also something which many theologians have argued for over the years.
