The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Hi, I consider myself a Cultural Christian or in other words a non believer who's an ally of Christianity. Lately I've been listening to an audio book version of the bible on youtube so I can better understand and respect those with faith and who knows maybe find my own as well.

Anyway early in the old testament I'm noticing a lot of sections have to do with names and families. Someguy who's son is Someotherguy and who's son is Anotherguy on and on and on. I'm just wondering why there is such a meticulous obsession with these people and who's who? What does it matter?

Pic unrelated.

In ancient times record keeping was a rather sparse activity. Genealogies helped people keep track of time and family/tribal connections. Does it matter? Yes, sort of, but only in terms of historical interest.

You should probably start with the Gospels in order, then acts.

Right after or in between read some proverbs and psalms.

Then start reading the epistles if you want to start getting into the practical guide of how2apply this wisdom irl. Or if you want to start including OT, i suggest ecclesiastes, job, wisdom, tobit, jonah; in any order you please, one or two or all of them.

You can also read genesis before this at any time, its quite a trip if youre in the right disposition. Same goes for revelation.

Eventually read Isiah, probably the best book ever written.

Reading the bible in order is chill (which i assume you are doing and you got to the kings arc) but its much better to get the core first (NT), and slowly build the framework around that. A lot more meaningful connections made this way.

The genealogy puts the events into historical context, because the events of the Bible are true, and it shows that the story is about the tribe of Israel and its descendents. It later comes into play in the Gospels where Christ's genealogy is given to prove that He is the Messiah.

Along with what other anons have said, without it, it would one piece of information less that we would be aware of to use for connecting the pieces of the history together. This was a historical means for people to record and transmit their heritage. Without it things would be more vague and there would be more room to doubt the existence of the some of the biblical figures.
