When, if ever, should a Christian resort to violence? How far does it have to go before Christians as a demographic resort to violence to preserve themselves and their people?

for your personal enemies it's never acceptable to go to violence, it's better for us to die than to kill another.

But when it comes to defending others thats a different story, if your homeland is being invaded it's acceptable to fight in a war, countless saints have been soldiers. But in times of persecution if God calls you to martyrdom you shouldn't fight back.
