I know that Mormonism is a false teaching, but would wish to know how to convince my friend who is very mormon, to become Christian, preferable confessional lutheran.

Given you believe in apostolic succession, remind him of how we have bishops that succeded the apostles, from Ireland to Ethiopia and India.

He will go

>But we have the Quorum of the Twelve

Remind him it should be Quorum of the Eleven, given they believe Saint John the Apostle is still alive, somewhere.

>Lutheran

Lutheran Satire's vids on mormons are your friend.

Some who've had considerable discussion with some are of the opinion that they might not have much longer due to the opening up of information available to them.

> I don't understand apostolic succession

It is the succession system to trace your roots all the way back to the apostles and ,ergo, Jesus.

In order for a priest to be ordained he has to be ordained by a bishop. That bishop was, at one point, ordained by another bishop, that bishop was ordained by an even older bishop. So on and so forth until eventually it ends with the apostles being ordained by Jesus.

Apostolic succession is nesscary because it is proof that the priest is vaild and got his orders from Jesus directly. If said priest or pastor cannot trace it all the way to Jesus, that priest is invalid. This was also a safeguard agianst heretics that can calim that they were ordained, but never were.

Unfortunately, for Lutherans, apostolic succession doesn't apply to them because Luther was excommunicated and cut off from the Church. So this would actually explain why your church sees apostolic succession as invalid which doesn't suprise me at all.

But aside from all of that, the other anon is right. Lutheran Satire makes pretty good videos and puts JWs and Mormons in their place.

The LS video on Mormons you were looking for.

I read up on my catechism and it doesn't necessarily support apostolic succession, but it does believe that reverends must be appointed by god through the church to recieve the office of the keys in order to act as priests.

I believe lutherans were into apostolic succession?

Regardless, the point still stands.

There should be 11, not 12.

Also, LS has other vids on mormons besides it.

Look up them showing how their "doing as much as you can for evangelisation"(paraphrased) verse from their books makes sure everyone NO ONE gets into heaven, logically speaking, if you wanna attack it from a more justification-based, protestant angle.

Hi there, same anon here.

The problem with that is literally anyone can declare that God has ordained them to preach x,y, and z. Few can actually prove it. A Lutheran priest claiming God ordained them to preach is no different than a Baptist or a Methodist or a JW or a Mormon claiming the same thing.

Literally, tomorrow I can read the bible, claim the Holy Spirit has filled me with knowledge and claim God has ordained me to reignite the flames of Taborism, but this time with a modern twist.

All I would need to do is fill out IRS form 1023 and declare myself a 501(c)(3) church and badda-bing-badda-boom I just made another Church. The real one true church. All other churchs are just "traditions of men" and mine is true because God Himself ordained me.

There was never an expectation of another testament after the NT. The entire point of the Old Testament is the expectation of the New Testament fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Mormoms are so flippant about this, Have you heard of the New Testament? Welp what about another one!? Also their entire belief system is literally predicated on a lie, that the Holy Bible is unreliable. Pic related, point #8.

Ultimately they need to ask themselves, what is truth?

In light of the current secularization happening across the civilized world, I think there's some merit to the idea that God has an ongoing relationship with us that can change depending on what we do. If God gave us the new covenant because the Jews broke the old one on a mass scale, is it not reasonable to say that since we are breaking the new covenant on a mass scale today, God will pass judgment upon us before providing further revelation?

This is LDS's one good idea, and even this they take to an absolutely ludicrous level by claiming that everyone with a penis can be a prophet and priest, but I do find it interesting to consider. Why does God not send us prophets anymore, or if he does, why do we not recognize them? It is strange to have a God that used to engage with his followers, but now does not. His Word and commandments are, of course, eternal, but our actions are in flux. Has God given up on us? If so, I pray that the day of reckoning comes swiftly and that the faithful are not left waiting

>Why does God not send us prophets anymore, or if he does, why do we not recognize them?

The Orthodox Church recognizes many Saints from the late 20th century, some of whom had the gift of prophecy. Frequently those who know a person who is later canonized knew that there was something special about him/her during his/her life, but humility is a very important aspect of Orthodox life and so you won't find a devote man/woman standing on a pedestal proclaiming themselves to be a prophet.

>If God gave us the new covenant because the Jews broke the old one on a mass scale

That's not why God gave us the New Testament, the entire point of the Old Testament is the preparation for Jesus Christ hence the New Testament (i.e. New Covenant). The Jews of today are still awaiting the Messiah although He already appeared 2,000 years ago. I don't know what else to say, but to go back and read the Old Testament if you haven't already.

>This is LDS's one good idea

Mormonism directly goes against the Book of the Revelation where they are adding to Scripture.

>Why does God not send us prophets anymore

The Holy Spirit imparts various spiritual gifts to the Church, one of which is prophecy. Read Galatians. If you're unable to spiritual discern these matters, then that's your problem, not God's.

Anyways, at the end of the day you're the one that's going to have to face up to God and account for the decisions you have made and unfortunately some of these decisions will weigh on you for all of eternity. Adam chose the fruit of knowledge of good and evil and paid the price, and you have a similar choice as well. There really isn't much difference between the situation Adam faced and your current conundrum.
