I normally go to Tridentine Mass, but recently I was with family, and I had to go to a regular parish. I could not believe how gauche it was - not just the all female altar servers, but the homily about hippie love, and Holy Communion being given by female lay Eucharistic ministers (people were guffawing as they went up to receive the Lord). I felt like I was in a very liberal Episcopalian church. Is this manner of worship truly Catholic? I cannot believe the difference…

Because Liturgical Abuses are more common than you think? My family is in a very liberal area, so maybe *you* can go to a conservative NO parish that only allows Gregorian chant and Communion on the tongue, but I don't have that luxury.

Well, I can say that the female alter servers are due to less males willing to participate. So they have no choice but to use females. The people guffawing usually aren't as pious. But there are people who respectfully receive the host, including me. And the priest has to be a you problem because though not "Trad Cath" outspoken, the priests at my parish are faithfully outspoken, tell people they shouldn't treat faith as a culture, and talk about the issues and controversies about the Church and how we must pray for it. So yeah it's pretty bad, but pay no mind to those who are less faithful unless you desire to help them and focus on your devotion.

It's a valid mass but it is certainly not the equal of the Tridentine Mass. Liturgical abuse in the Tridentine was like the priest being lazy and saying the readings in English without chanting it. In the NO it's literal clown masses with no reverence or dignity. I find the inexplicable irreverence of the NO masses to be more offensive to God because it is a perversion of the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Sorry you have a shit NO, my cathedral is pretty traditional so my Easter Vigil was actually pretty great. That said, convert your family to the Latin Mass it's the only proper way to worship the Lord - there are too many structural perversions in the NO.

When you start going to the TLM the NO becomes harder to tolerate because you now know first-hand how great the Mass could be. I am a cradle cath and lifetime NO-goer and the NO fed my soul for a time, but the last time I went to the NO I had to leave the room during the shakey-hands part because I was so butthurt by the Mass being interrupted with this obnoxious display of fake politeness.

Stay strong, anon. The generation that grew up with folk masses and loves liturgical dancing is getting older and is on its way out. Compared to thirty years ago the Tridentine Mass is very much alive and continues to attract more proponents. Even if the Novus Ordo Mass never truly goes away, I think it will need to adapt as more people become exposed to the TLM. Vid related isn't even as traditional as the Novus Ordo could get, but it's a step in the right direction.

Until then, if you're stuck in a Mass with an old hippie priest, nothing stops you from trying to make the most out of it. Say devotional prayers at the relevant points of the Mass, just as you might in a Latin Mass. You could also say a rosary during the offeratory.
