Personally, I liked it and was pleasantly surprised randomly seeing it on TV.

But I dont know what the consensus on it is.

I always found it enjoyable but it's been years since I watched it. So I can't speak to the faithfulness of the adaptation, but remember that it's an older film so it won't have the modern degeneracy in it.
