Incest with siblings was forbidden in the Mosaic law. Before then, humanities DNA hadn't become so corrupted that such restrictions were necessary. Hence why it is ok if Cain married a sister/niece.

If you read the whole book you will find OT/Torah established rules of close marriage around the time of Moses. Before that it was open season.

Several things considered incest in many modern countries (for example first cousins) are however just fine under the religion. Brother/ sister, parent/sibling and a few other close ones are out

What don't I understand? I understand that the risks of incest are because it makes it much more likely that dangerous recessive traits start expressing in the children. I understand that DNA, as a part of creation, is under God's curse and has been degrading over time since the fall. This would explain why it would be ok for Cain to commit incest ( because he and his close relatives would have almost perfect DNA in terms of diseases), but by the time of Moses things had gotten bad enough that God puts the laws against incest in place.

The people in the Old Testament, the Jews, they're not good people by our standards. God's point by being born amongst them is that we're not much different by His standards.
