Sadly, this isn't one of the CIA cults (which do exist too). It's something intrinsic to the American landscape. That of the pioneer age of the 19th century. Really, it goes back to our very founding even. This country attracts heretics en masse - via attracting individualism and "self-made men". But in the 19th century, it was a combo of this individualistic arrogance and the lawlessness of the frontier, so these guys were allowed to build their cults in the great wide open without anyone stopping them. It's Manifest Destiny, but in religious form. Almost ALL of the crazy denominations that exist today got their start in the 19th century alone (and then created further offshoots from those to this day).

Jehovah's Witnesses were part of a whole "Adventist" movement, for example. They're all Apocalyptic and Judaizers in one form or another.

Because there are 10 million of them, always have been, they're practically conquered natives of the area they live in, a secular leader like Putin won't even attempt to screw with them, meanwhile the JWs are a recent fringe foreign import just starting to take root, it's better to cut them off now, I can guarentee you that if Islam was the same way the same would happen to them but they aren't.
