Been waiting for someone to do this, but no one has yet.
For those who don't know, Serenity is an "American manga" about a delinquent highschool girl who reluctantly becomes friends with a group of evangelical Christians, and is eventually awakened to the gospel. On its face it doesn't sound good, but it really sucks you in once you get going. We usually have a dump thread around Easter, which is what I'm doing now.
Please enjoy, and discuss!

Do you think it's legal for me to read your dump of this series? Do you think it's legal for you to dump it? I'm pretty sure websites that allow you to read manga online are illegal so perhaps that applies here too?

Truly nailing the real issues of any created content: fixing on how many of which ethnic groups are in it… is that bad that there are black characters in it? Are they tiggers or just persons who happen to have an African background? I am not a fan of forced diversity, but is this even worth complaining?

If OP is just a friend allowing other friends to read his manga, then that's fine but there has to be line to separate this behaviour from that of the manga-hosting website. If OP downloaded this himself and is sharing it here then there's really no difference between that and all of us getting it straight from wherever OP originally, illegally downloaded it. In that case, we're all just pirates by proxy, basically.
Now, thinking about this more deeply, I've come to see that there really isn't a line. One could easily argue that since all manga hosted online must have had at least one actual owner in order for it to be scanned, reading manga online is okay because it's just one friend sharing his manga with hundreds of thousands of "friends". If OP owns a legal copy though, it really is just him sharing it with his /christian/ brothers. It's actually possible to rationalise it as one guy sharing it with his friends.
These are my thoughts.

Then the blame is on him, not us. When your friends steals a comic and shows you without telling, you would enjoy it. But once you give it back to him and he tells you, you're not the one to blame. If you're getting that feeling and feel bad, just save up money and buy it yourself. That way, you've done something legal and now can enjoy whenever you want too.

A quote, taken directly from the authors blog:
>Many creators today are angry at people who copy and trade their work digitally via peer-to-peer networks, but that anger is misplaced. The audience is not the problem; the audience, as noted above, are the genuine owners to the material. The problem is that non-human entities (i.e., corporations) exploit the work of human innovators and the right of access to audiences to such a degree that digital copying becomes not just a viable option but one bordering on the ethical.
https://buzzdixon.com/home/writing-2/vampires-and-the-paradox-of-copyright
"Ethical" access to media is almost completly defined not by the creative people behind a work, but by the rich people who buy the rights to publish it. In the age of the internet it has become virtually impossible to controll the paid spread of information and entertainment without the ability to abuse the copyright law for your own monetary benefit. But of course we shouldn't forget about the artist just trying to put food on the table. If you feel like, that through reading this manga, you have taken something away from the people who made it, you should think about getting a copy yourself: But be aware, that you would have to find a source, which won't sell you a used or preowned book and also pays royalties to the original author and writer. In this case it seem like the company originally responsible for the creation of this work ceased operation.
Also remember: When he had to feed 4000 people, Jesus multiplied just 5 loaves and two fish, and everybody was sated. Giving somebody something he desires isn't a sin in and of itself, even if it's just a copy.

As Christians, I believe we're called to abide by the laws. My suspicion now is that even if the creator is comfortable with people pirating his work, that still does not mean that it's legal to do so and so you cannot read OP's dump.
My concern is not with whether or not I take something away from the creator. My concern is with whether or not I have broken the law.

No, they can't. Part of being a Christian is behaving appropriate to your age.
d9be3e No.801775

Which part of the Bible exactly says this?
You do realise that it is adults who write children's books, don't you?
You do realise that it is adults that determine what children's books or shows should win an award, don't you? And that these award shows are followed by other adults too, don't you? Are all these people acting against God for consuming this content?
I guess my biggest gripe with your argument is that when I became Christian, I realised that I could no longer consume content with profanity in it. This meant cutting out a lot of stuff I enjoyed but hey, at least there's Children's shows. Those are profanity-free and can still be pretty entertaining. And now, here's you, stating that these too are unacceptable. I just cannot accept this. I feel like my only options for interesting profanity-free content are documentaries and the news.

How about work and raise and family? Or read serious literature? Your whining is insubstantial. Being a Christian necessitates self-denial and the only way you wouldn't understand this is if you're a Burger or a Catholic.
d9be3e No.801800
>>801789
Working and raising a family are all primary things you do with your time. Those are not leisurely activities. Reading serious literature isn't for me. I don't enjoy serious literature. Even when I watch Anime, I find people critiquing the writing of the show in ways I cannot follow. They talk about things like "pacing" and how the foreshadowing was supposedly so obvious but all of the stuff they're talking about doesn't even occur to me when watching the show. I don't have that critical eye.
My whining matters. There's nothing wrong with enjoying children's content as a Christian adult. I believe Christ wants us to enjoy life at times and relax a little. I maintain the stance that the only people who bash children's content are teenagers themselves, trying way too hard to "act mature". I didn't know Protestants rejected fun.
I will join the other adults that consume and discuss children's content.

I enjoyed it. It's very cheesy and the kind of thing I'd roll my eyes at in my atheistic youth but I was able to overlook the obvious "old man trying to relate to modern youth" translation issues (especially the internet scenes. Why in the world does the author think people type like that?) and accept it for what it is.
Actually now that I think of it maybe reading Serenity and being able to see it for the good it contains while forgiving it for it's cringyness is in itself a microcosm of Christianity?

I read the whole thing one morning over a cup of coffee, it was surprisingly good.
