The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What's the best reading sequence for a beginner?

Recommended were NLT to get the basics then NIV and compare and contrast between both editions. Is this solid advice?

Start with the Vulgate.

Huh? Just pick one translation and stick to it. What you hear at church and from your pastor/priest will shape your understanding of the scriptures more than the way the translators have decided to word them.

Although I find the NKJV to be pretty good. Easy to read but also keeps the cadency of the original text, and although it has some really unclear wording (like translating "Sheol", "Hades", and "Gehenna" as the same word) it should overall be more than sufficient.

In my opinion it'd be good if you could get your hands on a Bible with the so-called "apocrypha". But that's because I really like Sirach and 3 Maccabees.

Get a proper translation of your choice KJV, Douay-Rheims, RSV, ESV etc. and do further research on individual passages of interest separately. It seems like a waste of time to be reading through multiple paraphrased translations entirely.

For those who like the NKJV I recommend taking a look at the American KJV that's available online since it's even more faithful to the original KJ text.

Why put non-equivalent translations on the same chart?

For instance how does KJV compare to ESV, when the ESV removes over a dozen verses compared to it.

So which one is more "literal" and or more paraphrased in that case? The one that removes the entire verse thereby changing the passage or the one that actually provides a translation for it? How are they taking different approaches at that point and not actually translating two different documents. And if this is so, why would anyone still choose to use OP graphic despite knowing that? Are they trying to mislead people to think they are the same Bible?

if you want a translation that's easy to read, New Living Translation (NLT) and God's Word (GW) are both good starting points.

the NIV is a very neutral, balanced translation. it's accessible, but also more accurate and challenging than NLT or GW.

to get more in-depth, you have various options, depending on whether you want Catholic or Protestant, traditional or modern, dynamic or literal. there's Douay-Rheims and KJV, then RSV, RSV-2CE, ESV, NAB, JB, NASB, NKJV, and others.

ESV with a KJV for reference if Protestant, RSV2CE with a Douay-Rheims for reference if Catholic, and OSB if Orthodox.

Those translations are poor in my opinion. I'd settle for no less than the ESV with the deuterocanonical books.

I got the NIV and it's pretty good so far, not too difficult to understand and nicely structured. Will get the Douay-Rheims after I'm finished.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
