The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

without repeating your self over and over? I feel the need, especially when I am awoken early in the morning(always seems to be 3AM for some reason) but often end up just repeating things so I feel I must quit when that happens.

do you stop praying and read scripture? or what?

Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

second this for contemplation after some scripture. repetition's fine for the right reasons.

the wrong reasons being: trying to hypnotize yourself or something. the right reasons being: trying to focus on what you want to focus on rather than the television show you watched five minutes ago.

You find more things to pray about. Vain repetition for repetition's sake is not heard more by God.

Maintaining pure concentration on God consciousness, no words need to be said nor anything imagined.

1. The vain repetitions were vain because the scripture, in context, referred to the prayers of pagans not directed to the True God.

2. It's not about having things to pray about, one can focus on any concept of God while simultaneously repeating a verbal prayer on the lips. Which is an ancient method of prayer that has attended the Church for over 2,000 years.

Speaking the "Our Father" with no reverence or to just get through with it would also qualify as a "vain repetition".

God just wants us to talk.. to live with him in our consciousness and not get in that mental space where it's just your ego. That's the true essence of prayer. To always spiritually/mentally be looking upwards. It doesn't always have to be formal. Leave formality for group/spoken prayer. Those set prayers are more for our sake, to be on the same wavelength and to work together.. not for God's sake. He knows your heart even before you speak. What he wants us to do most of all is be aware of him first and foremost.

Mental prayer. You can literally pray all day, just in your thoughts. You don't have to recite regural prayers, just talk to God, give thanks to Him and ask for things, praise the beauty of what He has created, etc, in your own words.

It doesn't matter if you repeat yourself. You should just do it. Its good to have that deep personal connection in prayer, but sometimes prayer isn't enlightening, or moving. But you should still do it. Make it a discipline, like brushing your teeth, it's not particularly fun or interesting, but you do it.

>yadda yadda yadda

Moar liek “Yiddish Yiddish Yiddish!” Am I rite? Pagan gang rize up! M’jolnir… *tips Vikangz helmet*

Just kidding.

But yes, one should take some time during his/her day and do mental prayer.
