The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I am reading the Bible for the first time, the KJV, and have some difficulty understanding what is happening. I find it helpful to read a summary after each summary.

I’m planning at some point to read commentary, but I want to wait until I’ve thought about it on my own first. But to do that, I need a better sense of the story and summaries help.

Bible Hub

Also KJV is sometimes just wrong/screwed up, and it's missing the apocrypha, which is less apocryphal than we believed in 1500's thanks to the dead sea scrolls

Get the New Cambridge Paragraph edition. It's beautiful (as Cambridge bibles tend to be) and has the "apocrypha". Also, the church never gave it up. Just the Protestants ;)

I think there are some things that you really need either a study bible for, or you need a site that does commentary.

I was very unimpressed with my secondhand KJV and it's Masoretical choices, I want to get the other meme-Bible (Douai-Rheims), but I'll leave that for another time

On the plus side, I've gotten as far as 4 Kings

The Bible Project on Youtube.

Old Testament: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQI72THyO5I&list=PLH0Szn1yYNeeVFodkI9J_WEATHQCwRZ0u&index=3

New Testament: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dv4-n6OYGI&list=PLH0Szn1yYNecanpQqdixWAm3zHdhY2kPR&index=2

The only issue that I find in them is that they insist that the Bible should be read like one book, which is absolutely wrong.

Read a catechism from the denomination you believe is true.

You can also find commentaries of the saints online, especially there: http://www.ccel.org/fathers.html
