Remains one of my all-time favs. Sets out the debate around whether violence in defence of Christianity is valid and presents two different takes. Furthermore, has one of the best conversion scenes committed to celluloid. DeNiro is pretty epic.
And the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone (who did half the spaghetti westerns) is brilliant.
Good film. Enjoy it. But it IS long and might seem pretentious and overlong to some lesser minds. Persist. Enjoy the aesthetics.
Worst of all, it IS based on a true story. [film-spoiler] The Portuguese did covet the Spanish missions and conspired with the Spanish to have them handed over. The Church was just being used and manipulated since they were the rule-makers. Sad.
