The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

How do I become a monk in society?

I want to completely break away from society and just study Christianity

It's called cosmokalogeros. A lifestyle chosed by poets, artists and scholars. You're not an actual monk though.

Join a contemplative order like the Benedictines or Franciscans - though they're mendicants.

Perhaps me in a nutshell. If I didn't have family to take care of, I have a great opportunity in that one of Elder Ephraim's monasteries is outside my city (but if he has his way, it would seem he would turn all of the laity into monks).

When you die and go to heaven God will ask you why you abandoned the great commission

Everyone has a role in the church. Not everyone was an Apostle.

And when we die, we'll ALL have to account to Christ if we didn't pick up our cross and deny ourselves and build treasures in heaven. We'll all have to explain why we let the world stain us in the many ways it does.

Besides, you should learn the roots of monasticism. It's a good story. This is YOUR family, as much as everyone else's. You're not seperate from it, no matter how much you think.

Monastics started because the early church were martyred left and right for the first 300 years. When it finally became acceptable in the Empire (and endorsed.. and even entrenched with the powers that be), it left a bad taste in some people's mouths. They reflected on how much it such a stark contrast to just the previous years (some which they lived through themselves) where our brothers and sisters suffered and died for the faith. Some people who had converted to the faith were the very people who persecuted them before. And suddenly, everything was hunky dory.

They didn't think it right to live in comfort, and wanted honor those who died. They read the scriptures and wanted to fulfill what Christ said - to give up their possessions, to be least in the kingdom, to pick up their cross and follow him. The Martyrs before them sadly always had this opportunity.. But these imperial Christians suddenly found themselves in a different situation to fulfill what Christ had said. And they surely couldn't commit suicide! So they did the next best thing - they removed themselves from the comforts of civilization. And over time, they inspired those back in the cities to live holier lives themselves, and raised the bar for everyone, reminding them that we are called to seek God's holiness. That being Christian didn't mean some new "club" that people merely adapted to.

The Great Commision was given to the Apostles especially, and only for the rest of us in the sense of always be ready to share one's faith. BUT… Christ commanded all of us to deny ourselves. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It's all through the Gospels and Epistles. And Sola Fide won't get you there… nor will spreading this false message help others either. If it was as simple as Faith Alone, then Jesus would have welcomed the young rich man and never told him to drop everything and follow him.

That was a quite the ramble

>The great commission is only for us in the sense of always being ready to share your faith

Wrong

We have the command to preach the gospel

>BUT Christ commanded all of us to deny ourselves

And how do we do that?

<Pick up your cross and follow me

To follow his is to obey Him. What's his most urgent instruction?

<Preach the gospel to every creature

If you're not involved in missions, you're disobedient before God.

The foolish ones and the ones who are furious in their blindness are ignorant, because they do not believe that some can withdraw themselves from the social interaction with men (and) lead people to the kingdom of God.

If you don't believe that the constant prayer of monks and nuns serves an important role in lifting up the people of God you betray a lack of supernatural faith and a materialist view of the Church. They pray for the entire Church and for the salvation of the world constantly. According to you their prayer is not efficacious. That's heresy.

There is a term called heiromonk

Which is a monk that is also a preist.

So when they aren't performing the normal duties of a preist they are performing their duties of a monk and praying for the world indefinitely.

That sounds fine to me

Tbh that's usually a okay reply but in this context you're trying to bring up hieromonks to defend normal monks.

Normal monks do not need to become Priests to be accepted.

Is anybody here familiar with skoolies(buses turned into homes, sometimes but not always still mobile)/tiny houses(also sometimes mobile)/full time RV living? Generally its a very minimalist, sometimes off-the-grid lifestyle.

I'd think it would be compatible with a Christian lifestyle, especially for monks and hermits. I suppose there might be a challenge consistently getting to a Church for nomads though. Another problem though is that it seems some people with this lifestyle run into legal problems, usually due to unclear regulations regarding both housing/zoning and vehicle/transportation. I just found out about them and was interested, but I don't know how to do it legally.
