The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Hi, I want to read the bible (KJV), however I understand that if I read it by myself, I may just end interpreting the bible through my own point of view.

So I was wondering whether or not there are interpretations or study bibles (like the Orthodox Study Bible), that can give me a correct frame of reference when reading

Sort of like how the Quran has Tafsirs (Interperatations)

The last thing I want is to "think" jesus meant something, when in fact he is talking about another.

You should do it exactly the opposite way, read the Bible then read commentaries

The correct frame of reference is in the New Testament itself…which is seeing Christ in all of the scriptures. So start with Matthew. But the OSB expands on the same interpretative methods (since it's just following NT and patristic tradition, for the most part).

Read yourself then reread with a study bible on your next run.

I recommend the NASBRE (approved for private study by the Catholic church) since several boards had to approve the commentaries and several denoms were involved.

I don’t recommend reading a study bible that is just one person’s interpretation, even if they have a theology degree

Hey there anon, I think you should try it raw yourself first and foremost, simply from the beginning of the OT to the end of the NT, feel free to use the KJV too, it's legit, neutral and the few things that are lost in the translation well, they really don't matter for a first time reader.

Do read the KJV, now what you should do I think at least is to take notes and put them into the book while you're reading it, maybe even write on the pages and what you should write down is your own interpretation, your thoughts while reading it, what you've learned etc, then (I assume you don't belong to any denomination) take several study bibles from different denominations and while you read those, compare them to each other and most importantly to your own notes.

That way you can see what is the closest to you, were your views right in hindsight or not, what you've learned since etc, this requires a lot of time and dedication but is I think the best way to interpret the Bible the right way while also not completely letting your views go in favour of others' if you deem them to be right.

The NABRE IS a study Bible itself.. and it's full of commentary by faggots. I don't know how your Bishops ever approved it, but it's depressing to see.

Not trying to say it's all bad. I actually like the translation in many spots, on it's own.. but the publication as a whole is a disservice to Christians. It casts doubt and uses Higher/Historical Criticism throughout.

Start with kjv and form your own point of view. Then compare it to others.

Disagree, I'm no text expert textpert but that the kjv seems to give 'evil' an ontological status in Is 45:7 to the extent that God actually creates it would likely/should be very disconcerting for a first time reader. For this reason alone I would say avoid kjv as first time reader.

Feel free to say that he should avoid it but without a solution aka a replacement for the KJV you didn't really say much friend.

I myself at least certainly don't know of another translation that's alright for the most part, fairly neutral and not too hard to read with the latter point being my problem with other alternatives that are closer to the original text, I get headache after reading a few sentences and it's easy to misunderstand.

Later on they're great sure and it's good to compare them to the KJV but for a first read the KJV is one of the best I would say.

For the love of God get the ESV study Bible. It's the best study Bible there is with the most amount of material for you to learn. But study Bible commentaries aren't that in-depth otherwise the book would be hundreds of thousands of pages long. You can get study Bibles for individual books of the Bible. Pic related is just one of my stacks. Ignore the philosophy and Greek history book, that's for my personal unrelated study.

If you actually loved God, you'd get out of Wayne Grudem's cult.

Yikes! I love God and His bible as much as the next Christian but murder is too far. I don't know what this wayne guy put in the ESV, but I don't like it.

My friend, don't put your trust in man, put your trust in God's promises. If you truly seek God and the truth about Him, then He will lead you to Him.

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

- Psalms 145:18

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

- Proverbs 2:3-5

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

- Matthew 7:7-11
