The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

The Bible clearly says not to interpret dreams as signs from God but there are at least a few times where God gives prophetic dreams to people. I'm wondering where the lines are drawn regarding what counts as "interpreting dreams" and which dreams are given by God.

Does this mean we should never assume dreams are made by God, thus never to be interpreted? Or does it mean dreams can be interpreted but not credited to God?

I do think there is important information in dreams, not necessarily prophetic, but something that can teach you about your weaknesses and aspirations.

I can definitely see how allowing any interpretations can lead to demonic subliminal messaging and endless heresy. I certainly wouldn't trust any dreams that "reveal" anything.

That being said, if God were to make a special case for someone and give prophetic dreams, what would be the right way to know if it's from Him or just your mind making things up?

I am looking for information and resources on this topic, because I haven't come to a conclusion from reading scripture.

>The Bible clearly says not to interpret dreams as signs

Where does it say that? In all cases?

Dreams are a biological function anon, a function derived from stored memories. While one can certainly determine plenty of things from their dreams, absolutely new things can't be created from dreams. What you might interpret as a prophetic message is most likely your brain rephrasing various things you've heard or read into a composite.

As to whether dreams can be demonic, the answer is difficult. Certain types of dreams certainly do resemble the stereotypical image of demonic possession: a being holds you down and forces you to do things against your own will. However, none of the things in these dreams are truly new either: if you have a dream wherein a figure holds you down and forces you to view an unending barrage of wicked images for instance, none of those images will be entirely new to your brain. They may seem new, and may look unlike anything else, but they are in fact composed of various elements from various things you've seen in the past. So, in reality, these sorts of dreams likely derive from unforgotten sinful behaviour, actions or choices rather than demonic possession.

We can't know except by the fruits.

Prophecy ended with the apostolic age. If you are claiming to have a dream to interpret, you're saying God gave you special revelation. Such special revelation would be extremely urgent, since it's God's word, and the OT protocol for a false prophet is execution.
