Is it possible to kill and still be accepted by God? Is the sin of killing an ultimatum?

I always thought that one of the most obvious sins of the 10 Commandments was "thou shall not kill" so inb4 obviousness. But what if it were in self defence? If one were to fight to protect and died in battle without repentance, would they still be trialed for the sin of murder?

Despite those digits this. Not murder is the better translation. Don't forget while the 10 commandments were being given to Moses there was an order from the Lord in place to immediately kill anyone who tried to step foot on the mountain.
