The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Is swearing (or cussing, or whatever you want to call it) sinful?

Ephesians 4:29 - "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to hear."

I hear self-proclaimed Christians swearing a lot, on this board and IRL. Are they sinning? What speech is okay and what isn't?

That's a dumb question anon and you know it.

Probably none of it. I used to be worse. I tend to say "shit" often though.. Not directed at anyone necessarily. And it can be positive or negative even. "I did lots of shit yesterday" to negative: "That news story was full of shit".

I'm still confused on what makes it a bad word in these cases.. but sometimes just want to stop so others will chill out about it. I mean, is there really a difference between saying "That news story was full of shit" and "That news story was full of rubbish"?

I'd distinguish between strong language and "corrupting talk".

Intent, and choosing the appropriate way of speaking for the context/social setting, are probably more important than the choice of words.

Not swearing is hard. Highschool ruined me in that regard.

This anon is correct. There are many words which mean different things to different groups, and words without an inherently bad meaning which are still considered rude or vulgar in some groups. You can't appease everyone talking the exact same way all the time, so just adjust your speech depending on who you're with and you'll be fine.

For a non-linguistic example, giving someone a thumbs up is an extremely vulgar gesture in certain parts of the world. Does that mean you should never use it elsewhere? No.

Swearing in itself isn't as bad as what it leads to. Loose lips and an unwatchful mind. Speaking carelessly can lead to great harm. Of course, in itself, swearing is ugly and much more reflective of Satan than of Christ. I used to curse like a sailor, every other word started with F, thanks to God I'm making a lot of progress.

"corrupting talk" means more of a temptation, promotion of sin and heresy, I think.

But yeah, swearing is bad, because it is at least mostly generated by wrath.

We shouldn't be too prude in that regard. The Bible itself uses really strong language. Whore, piss, vomit, sodomite etc

Don't be silly, no one considers the words you just mentioned as 'swearing'.

Drop a 'pooh' every now and then? Be mindful of it, but don't beat yourself up. But like this anon, >>733321 , if swearing is part of your everyday life, stop it. And don't go to great lengths to defend it either.

Shit and piss being cuss words is a recent development, likely puritan seeing as shite and piss are fine in Britain. They are the appropriate terms for shitting and pissing in English. We use shortening ("pee") or loanwords ("urine", "defecation") to say it now. Very silly.
