The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

My friend keeps telling me I should try going to church. He isn't particularly religious, but I'm a complete winnie the pooh up, so he thinks it might be good for me.

I've never been to church before, so I have no idea how they work. Is it okay for me to just show up? Do I have to let someone at the church know that I want to go?

I'm a Baptist

We have entire teams of volunteers dedicated to welcoming people and there's a point in the service just for saying good morning and shaking hands

Some churches have a place on the website for "let us know you're coming!"

Orthodox here.

Dude, just go. A good church will welcome you with open arms and will be more than happy to answer your questions, show you the ropes, etc. During a service, either follow along the best you can, or only do what feels comfortable. If you just want to go in, sit and observe, that's perfectly fine too. Ultimately, the more you go, the more you get acclimated to things and before you know it, you're part of the crew.

If you happen to run across a cold or snobbish church, brush the dirt off your shoulders and move on.

Also Baptist, I love that part. I got bad social anxiety and have trouble talking with strangers (one of my big hurdles with soul winning) but everyone is so nice and happy to see you I make an extra effort to shake and say good morning to everyone.

OP, just show up. If you're a first timer the regulars should be able to notice and if the church is a good one they'll introduce themselves and be there if you have any questions.

Every step you take towards God he takes three steps towards you.

Also, church should have a small book about liturgy and explanations for what's going on. You can read along during service to better understand what uappens.

Also, if you decide to convert, you will become catechumen and your mentor will try to explain everything, including the service.
