The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Should everyone have access to a Bible?

The technology wasn't always there until the printing press. Essentially there was only a handful in existence, they were written in Latin, and only a handful of people actually comprehended what it said. (someone please correct me on the specifics and dates of this, but this is the gist of it) The rest of normal every day people and peasants just got secondhand information from these middlemen.

The Word is still difficult for most to understand, and this hierarchy still kind of exists, with the edicts of Catholicism being delivered by interpreters for the scripture for people with basic faith/sin questions. It can be seen on this board.

I can see that men, leaders, and teachers have a responsibility to share what they understand with their discretion.

Can this responsibility be entrusted to individuals?

Pic unrelated.

Yes. If people can’t understand it, the goal should be more explanations and guides. We had heresies before the Bible was available to all, so getting rid of the Bible isn’t gonna make heresy go away.

>Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

And if we’re gonna have people who aren’t following the apostolic faith, I’d much rather they be Protestants (who practice baptism, believe in the trinity, and worship God) than Cathars (violent people who hate God and are basically closer to neo-pagans than Christians).

>But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

I agree with OP in part. As far as doctrine, theology, etc. goes, the lay faithful don't need to get that from the Bible. We have a dedicated instructor (the Church) with 2000 years of faithful, qualified study behind us. In this sense, decrying the Church for keeping the Bible out of the hands of the public is pretty silly.

However, Sacred Scripture is the most potent devotional reading there is. Lectio Divina, chanting the Psalms… even just casually reading the Gospels can help us feel much closer to Our Lord. We're awfully privileged to have such an edifying resource at our fingertips.

Well it's not like anything can be done about it anyways short of turning back time.

Might as well make the most of it.

Full access to reading, not full access to interpreting or you end up with heresy.

Daily reminder that none of you would even get close to viewing a Bible were it not for Protestants

Now where's your precious Council of Trent?

Is this a real question?

The bible should be widely disseminated.

maybe, but what it mostly is is true
