The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Did anything decent come out this year? How was Paul, Apostle of Christ (directed by Andrew Hyatt, starring James Faulkner and Jim Caviezel)? Was that any good?

I liked it.

I liked it.

I've been conflicted over the Pauline writings versus the red letters of Christ for some time having read a lot of the Pauline vs Anti-Pauline arguments.

This movie really put Paul in a very sympathetic light for me and gets at the heart of what he was about.

What about Paul do you feel is at odds with Jesus? Because the more I read, the more I see a beautiful consistency throughout the whole bible. The biggest problem I see is that people in modern times downplay Christ's truth-telling and righteous judgment while overplaying Paul's "conservatism" and judgment. Compared to the popular limp-wristed Jesus, Paul seems harsh. But he's really anything but.

Just my tastes, but I would have preferred if the movie showed Paul's travels and preaching. I don't know why they would make up a fictional scenario surrounding his imprisonment in Rome when they had a full book of the bible detailing his life.

Thanks, everyone.

I've been hearing a lot of praise for Paul Schrader's First Reformed just recently. But Schrader also wrote the screenplay for Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (based on the Kazantzakis novel) which caused plenty of controversy. I'm not sure if First Reformed would be a decent movie to watch based on Schrader's track record when it comes to religious movies.

Me too, it was just a thought/argument I was entertaining and working through for a while.

There are lots of sites dedicated to shitting on Paul as a false apostle. Worth a look as I'd be interested to hear your opinion. Just Google "Paul false apostle".

Regarding a critical evaluation of it I'd say the scenes of pagan ritualism looked interesting, unfortunately the depiction of Christian tradition is sparse by comparison. Probably hadn't developed as much by then.

It appears to have some desire to insert modernist politically correct idealism into it like with the way cordiality between sexes and their meekness is portrayed in what is supposed to be a portrayal of a patriarchal culture of classical antiquity.

The ideal would be for a more subtle or idiosyncratic portrayal of the historical culture along the lines of the Rome series.

One can only dream for such production about any other ancient historical period. Also the scene with the burning at the stake in the middle of the street seemed a bit too much to believe.

Now I need to see Risen. Looks to be similar to what you say in its style.

I wonder if making alternate stories like this could be heretical.

Schrader was raised in a strict Calvinist household. He didn't even see a movie until he was about 18, I believe. So he definitely is familiar with the faith. And he's discussed it in films before. Most notably in Hardcore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBieGBscydw

That being said, he's certainly not a Calvinist now and I doubt he really has good memories of his childhood. I'm going to guess it's not an overall positive view. Probably like Francis Schaeffer's son who ended up being a liberal degenerate who hated his childhood.

Aren't those mostly salty leftists who want female pastors?

I didn't finish it. The dialogue felt really stilted and robotic to me, and I just got bored. The way the small Christian community was presented just seemed kind of cultish to me because of how everyone talked. Old religious films like Quo Vadis and Barabbas represented the early church in a much more likeable way, I think. Paul and Peter in Quo Vadis especially was just great.

Jim Caviezel is good. I'll definitely be watching the Passion of the Christ sequel and I'm pretty sure everyone else here will be as well.

obviously everyone here is gonna watch the passion sequel, but i'm nervous about how it's gonna go. the church hasn't really talked that much about the harrowing of hell, despite it being a very interesting topic. i hope mel gibson doesn't go too far into heresy on this one.

he does seem to be heavy into mystics and stuff and i'm not really sure if any of them have gone much into the harrowing of hell. now that i think about it though, if he could pull it off it could really be great because literally every other part of the bible has been somewhat dealt with, save the apocalypse.

i wish someone would make a movie or animation about the visions of mystics like st hildegaard though as well. that would make a totally amazing psychedelic animation.

More like a liberal college club. I mean they weren't an officially sanctioned institutional religion either.
