Peter Waldo

John Wycliffe

Jan Huss

Three great men. Three great precursors to the holy reformation. They stood up against the tyranny and harlotry of the Roman Catholic Church and suffered great persecution for their faith in Christ.

Waldo had to flee into the mountains, Wycliffe was declared a heretic and attacked simply for translating the Bible and making it available to the people, and Jan Huss became a martyr for the faith of Christ by being burnt alive on a stake.

Let us honor these men as great theologians and as great followers of Christ. Let them be an example for all of us to stand up for Christ against those who twist his words and introduce heresies into the Word of God and cause oppression and sin among the people of God. Amen.

“Sin of divination”

The irony of that picture.

Divination = communicating with spirits other than God.

Praying to saints =???

Goes without saying, but your post is just a mischaracterization of Catholic practice, hence the only irony here is that you think there was any:

>But the difference between praying to the Saints and conjuring up the dead is exactly the same as the difference between magic and miracles. Magic is condemned in Scripture as well (Rev. 21:8), and precisely for this reason: it seeks to achieve the supernatural by working around God, or by trying to force His hand. J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, admitted as much in an interview with Oprah, saying, “I’m not saying I believe magic is real—I don’t. But that’s the perennial appeal of magic—the idea that we ourselves have power and we can shape our world.” That’s a good definition of magic, and also what makes the appeal of magic so dangerous.

>It’s Lucifer’s non serviam all over again: we’ve got magic, who needs God?

That's why it's likened to rebellion.

Luther had a man crush on Hus over sola scriptura, and the Waldensians rejected going before a priest to receive forgiveness of sins.

In exactly what way were they Catholic?

The concept of mass, a clerical hierarchy, voluntary poverty and no sola fide.

They compromised their beliefs later on when the Reformation happened to join the kool kids klub and thus the modern-day Waldensians are nothing like the originals.

515723  No.710332

>>710325

>The concept of mass

They rejected transubstantiation.

>a clerical hierarchy

They rejected that any ecclesial body has the authority to call ministers, or give them authority to preach the gospel. They furthermore talked of the Pope as the whore of Babylon.

>voluntary poverty

There is no contradiction with traditional Protestantism here.

>no sola fide

<The Nobla Leycon

"For, I dare say, and it is very true,

That all the Popes which have been from Silvester to this present,

And all Cardinals, Bishops, Abbots, and the like,

Have no power to absolve or pardon,

Any creature so much as one mortal sin;

'Tis God alone who pardons, and no other."

It may not be explicitly sola fide, but it is most certainly against the Roman view about how we are forgiven of sins.

515723  No.710336

>>710325

>They compromised their beliefs later on

No one doubts that they changed their beliefs over time, but the question is whether they were originally closer to Protestantism than Catholicism.

The answer is clearly that they were.

0fcde8  No.710340

>>710332

>They rejected transubstantiation.

Now that's a strawman.

I said they still held mass, even the Lutherans did/do without transubstantiation.

>They rejected that any ecclesial body has the authority to call ministers, or give them authority to preach the gospel. They furthermore talked of the Pope as the whore of Babylon.

>Every clerical hierarchy needs a pope

Let me quote Wikipedia quickly:

"Early Waldensians belonged to one of three groups:

Sandaliati (those with sandals) received sacred orders and were to prove the heresiarchs wrong

Doctores instructed and trained missionaries

Novellani preached to the general population"

>There is no contradiction with traditional Protestantism here.

Voluntary poverty is completely against protestantism since it's a form of asceticism and one might even say works.

>It may not be explicitly sola fide, but it is most certainly against the Roman view about how we are forgiven of sins.

Also La nobla Leyczon:

O Brethren, give ear to a noble Lesson,

We ought always to watch and pray,

For we see this world nigh to a conclusion,

We ought to strive to do good works,

>>710336

>No one doubts that they changed their beliefs over time

It was blatant compromising to get support from the big boys up in Zürich.

I doubt they still go out in old, simple clothes and preach voluntary poverty.

9a83ad  No.710361

>I said they still held mass, even the Lutherans did/do without transubstantiation.

Wrong. Lutherans do Divine Service, not Mass.

>wikipedia quote

<using (((wikipedia))) as a source

Anyway, so what if they had these? No one is saying they were perfect.

>Voluntary poverty is completely against protestantism since it's a form of asceticism and one might even say works.

There are Protestant religious orders that have nuns and monks, including Anglican, Lutheran, and even Methodist.

>We ought to strive to do good works,

Yes of course, we believe good works prove faith.

So then how does your point help your assertion that the Waldensian were closer to catholics than protestants.

>>Every clerical hierarchy needs a pope

Ok, but how then were they closer to Catholicism? Most Protestant Churches have clerical hierarchy under your definition.

>Voluntary poverty is completely against protestantism since it's a form of asceticism and one might even say works.

Neither asceticism, or works are contrary to the protestant faith.

>We ought to strive to do good works,

Neither asceticism, or works are contrary to the protestant faith.

>It was blatant compromising to get support from the big boys up in Zürich.

So? That doesn't mean that they were not closer to Protestantism than Catholicism when they began.

Because if you're a heavily persecuted group of Italian "heretics" and you want the persecution to stop so bad you're willing to compromise your beliefs, you're going to adopt the theology of a distant Swiss canton instead of the huge Europe-wide empire that is actually persecuting you

Waldenesian (((Protestants)))

WALDO ("Valdesius") CONFESSION OF FAITH : Catholic to the Core

"In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and of the Blessed and Ever-Virgin Mary. Be it noted by all the faithful that I, Valdesius, and all my brethren, standing before the Holy Gospels, do declare that we believe with all our hearts, having been grasped by faith, that we profess openly that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three Persons, one God….

"We firmly believe and explicitly declare that the incarnation of the Divinity did not take place in the Father and the Holy Spirit, but solely in the Son, so that he who was the divine Son of God the Father was also true man from his Mother.

"We believe one Church, Catholic, Holy, Apostolic and Immaculate, apart from which no one can be saved, and in the sacraments therein administered through the invisible and incomprehensible power of the Holy Spirit, sacraments which may be rightly administered by a sinful priest….

"We firmly believe in the judgment to come and in the fact that each man will receive reward or punishment according to what he has done in this flesh. We do not doubt the fact that alms, sacrifice, and other charitable acts are able to be of assistance to those who die.

"And since, according to the Apostle James, faith without works is dead, we have renounced this world and have distributed to the poor all that we possess, according to the will of God, and we have decided that we ourselves should be poor in such a way as not to be careful for the morrow, and to accept from no one gold, silver, or anything else, with the exception of raiment and daily food. We have set before ourselves the objective of fulfilling the Gospel counsels as precepts.

"We believe that anyone in this age who keeps to a proper life, giving alms and doing other good works from his own possessions and observing the precepts from the Lord, can be saved.

"We make this declaration in order that if anyone should come to you affirming that he is one of us, you may know for certain that he is not one of us if he does not profess this same faith."
