The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Okay, so one time I got into an argument with an atheist guy online, and he said you don't need to believe in Jesus to go to have, instead you need to do good deeds. Hell is only reserved for criminals and the likes. Note that that guy actually doesn't believe the existence of heaven and hell flat out and what he said was what he learned when he was in a Catholic school.

I told him that's not the case, and that you need to confess Jesus as your savior to receive salvation and that you could still be a decent guy with moral codes but will still be condemned if you don't repent and seek salvation. He told me that Bible isn't accurate and was constantly changed and altered by Roman emperors at their convenience and that he knew plenty of Catholics who would disagree with me as to how to get into heaven or end up in hell.

The argument happened long ago but it just popped in my mind again and I'd like to see what's you guys' stance on it since this board is full of Catholics. I'm Baptist btw

3/4 of "Catholics" are pro-LGBT so 3/4 of "Catholics" are not even Catholic.

He's wrong. It's that simple. I'm not even Catholic, but I know he's wrong, both by their standards and those of Christ. You need to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior to get to heaven.

The problem here is that these people set such a low bar for what constitutes "good" that they claim they're good people even when the sum of their existence is working their 9-5 job, being generally polite to the people they briefly interact with and going home to jack off 3 times then watch Netflix. They're not even good people in a worldly sense, let alone in the far more strict sense God demands of us to be spiritually pure.

When these people end up in judgement they're going to see their "good deeds" as a few tiny specks of light in a sea of darkness that was every hurtful act, both intentional and negligent. Then they will realize their entire life was spent caring only for themselves while they deluded themselves the pocket change they gave to the homeless guy in the corner qualifies them as a good person. How much suffering is occurring right now that could be ended by one, just one person going out and saying to the suffering souls on the street "Here, come into my house and eat with me, sleep here tonight in the warmth"

Surely there are enough "good people" undeserving of Hell to do that simple act? Or are there?

I dont know about what others will write, but in Orthodoxy heaven and hell are states of soul depending on how one receives and perceives God and His Love, meaning that Godless heaven is as oxymoronic as round square. Good works in this case are manifestation of said living faith, not as separate merits.

Those are claims he needs to prove to on his part. Sin entered the world through Adam, which cause a gap between us and God. Only through the Holy Spirit by Christ can we truly become connected to the Trinity.

Obviously this guy and you haven't studied on the construction of the canon. Here's a book to get started. http://www.ccel.org/ccel/alexander_a/canon.iii.i.html
