Zoroastrian priests that saw the star as part of a prophecy of theirs, that said a star would herald the prince of the world's birth, a messianic figure born of a virgin, and which will come to destroy the power of demons forever(in it's shortened form. full prophecy has a lot of iranian stuff in it's)

They're mages. Also the gospels never actually mention their number and in some traditions they are more.

Are you accusing them of witchcraft?

Hey people believed in that type of stuff back then, one must also keep in mind this technically is supposed to have taken place before Jesus atoned for anything.

The cognate word is used across many major languages as well as in Greek, Latin, and Syriac but for some reason was not inherited by the medieval Anglic tradition although Old English translations have it along with some term relating to stars (tungol-witegan), Wycliffe has astromyenes (astrologers). For it to translate literally to wise men the Greek word would have had to be a word related to 'gnosis' or 'sophia'.

“The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Madian and Epha: all they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and shewing forth praise to the Lord.” (Isaiah 60:6, D-R)

“The kings of the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts.” (Psalm 71:10, D-R)

Both.

Who did the Magi think Jesus was? Was he Mithras?
