It's poorly used because every heretic from mormons to JWs love to retreat to that verse whenever their theology gets put to the test or they feel threatened by a challenge.

When Christians are against protestantism it's not because we literally HATE protestant people, we don't, it's because we disagree with much of their watered down and and flimsy theology, which fluctuates from denomination to denomination, and seems to be getting worse and worse as time goes on.
