I just learned about what it means because you wrote this post and I ran off to wikipedia, so thank you.

Fought with it many times in various guises always tailored to the information I was ready to accept at that point in the spiritual path or which was foremost in my mind. I always fought it because whenever I fell into feelings of pride, my actions didn't follow my thoughts. I was habituated to the forms of good conduct and as a result what was going on in my mind was in total disharmony.

Basically you're in the clear unless you've become infatuated by receiving spiritual gifts, or decided that you are worthy, or that you can game the system somehow.

Most definitely, that gets everyone from time to time. For instance I was trying to get into prayer because meditation that's often touted nowadays was doing nothing for me, it was only briefly successful at eliminating stress frankly it's a completely retarded practice, because you don't need short term relief from stress, you need to put an end to pride which destroys all your effort and will to work which leads to stress in the long run.

At any rate, I initially searched what to do online and turns out I actually needed more emphatic words to focus on than the Jesus prayer that Orthos I'm told tend to use. I switched to repeating a variation on Matthew 8:8 I heard in church once. Perhaps it was the overly formal words were too much for a noob

I'm having trouble with pride/prelest too.

I may be mistaken, but I have been trying to fight pride for while now and I'm beginning to think it's a very slow process. Also, I think that the only way we can defeat pride is with God. I've been basically doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out how to be humble and not prideful, but I think it's all a gift from God, in the end. We have to do everything we can, like remember our sins and try to be humble, but the only way we can truly defeat it is by God.
