The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

"Unconditional election" asserts that God has chosen from eternity those whom he will bring to himself not based on foreseen virtue, merit, or faith in those people; rather, his choice is unconditionally grounded in his mercy alone.

To rephrase my question a bit, would me becoming a faithful Presbyterian that genuinely perseveres in faith and due to irresistible grace and can't leave it mean I'm 'possibly' one of the supposed elect?

Being a faithful Presbyterian or a faithful Reformed Baptist isn't what helps you persevere in faith. God's grace through the faithful following Christ alone is what keeps you persevering.

>"possibly"

What's the deal with non-Calvinists and always being concerned with uncertainty and possibility? Repent (if you haven't done so), believe (if you haven't done so), and the the witness of the Holy Spirit will show that you are a believer.

Yeah, but if you so much as scratch your nose wrong, your elect status will be removed and they'll burn you at the stake or drive you out of the community or whatever. Seriously, don't even sleep the wrong way or wear the wrong shoes. The conditions for being "Elect" are so strict that, in the end, nobody is Elect.

It's been the opposite from my experience. The hardcore Calvinists are doubt and worrying about whether they might recant everything on their deathbed because it's all beyond their control.

And, they think, it might turn out they were just a tool to that end.

Funny because I've never even once actually seen that, just non-Calvinists claiming it

This question makes no sense and seemingly has nothing to do with the OP. Unconditional Election is just the idea that God chooses who will ultimately be saved based on nothing but His own good pleasure, that is, not based on them fulfilling a condition like autonomously choosing to believe in Him or to do good works.

So this is just another "bash the Calvinists" thread. Good to know!

What are you talking about? If actual hyper-Calvinists believe that it's still a lot different from Calvinist doctrine, you cant lose your salvation.

Calvinists can be as convinced as they want, but if they're wrong, it doesn't matter. Delusion never saved anyone.

I could stand about eight seconds of that before turning it off. Thanks for the answer though.

I do wonder how many people on /christian/ have read any of Calvin's works.
