Thoughts?

It unfortunately seems pretty sound to me. It's strange how would Reza Aslan take a leap of faith into Islam even if this work practically discredits important parts of the Qur'an.

>Aslan argues that Jesus was a political, rebellious and eschatological (end times) Jew whose proclamation of the coming kingdom of God was a call for regime change, for ending Roman hegemony over Judea and ending a corrupt and oppressive aristocratic priesthood.[1]

>pretty sound

No.

This book does shake up your beliefs, mostly when there's an investigation on the account of the historical Jesus. At least it did shake my beliefs, when you compare Jesus of Nazareth to Jesus the Christ.

According to the author, he was no more than a man, although quite an appreciable one.

Reza Aslan is Muslim, however, and I'm pretty sure he's taking a leap of faith on that one, because Islam is easy to disprove. Possibly just because it's the faith he grew up with.

As much as researching the historical Jesus makes my faith more of a faith-based leap instead of one based on reason, I still consider myself a Christian. It's more about taking a huge leap of faith and believing the Gospels, just like with any other religion.

<According to the author, he was no more than a man

Totally and utterly wrong of that author john 20:28-29

>And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

>Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Islam is fake and ignored acts 10:10-17 allowing the eating of meats. Their quran book would make God a liar if it were true, which it is not true and they are liars. Why do these cancerous thread keep getting made?

TL;DR : It's a weak unoriginal interpretation of the life of Jesus.

>John 20:28-29

You're basing your claims on the Gospels, within that framework, everything can be refuted.

>Islam is fake and ignored acts 10:10-17 allowing the eating of meats. Their quran book would make God a liar if it were true, which it is not true and they are liars.

Allah could've simply made the claim not to eat certain meat. Because that's simply what Muhammed's scribes wrote down, without considering Islam as a serious religion but just an historical account.

>Why do these cancerous thread keep getting made?

Because challenging your worldview results in cognitive dissonance.

>muslim apologist wrote a book about Christ

He's the guy who ate human brains right? Seems like someone I'd be willing to put a lot of trust in.

Wait, how can a Muslim interpret Jesus in secular terms, as just another Jewish Zealot? According to them, wasn't Jesus a prophet of Islam and the Messiah, who was miraculously saved from crucifixion and ascended into Heaven? Muslims might be infidels and not believe Jesus was God, but they can't believe that Jesus was just another dude, unless they also want to believe that Muhammad got some things seriously wrong.

I think he is a Muslim in name only. A cultural Muslim. He probably just continues calling himself one for PC points, so he can be an example of a smart, secular, liberal Muslim.

I actually saw Reza Aslan speak in my city a few months ago. He said that, for a while, he was enamored with the gospel and shared it with many people, but he eventually turned back to Islam.

Matthew 13:5-6

https://www.firstthings.com/blogs/firstthoughts/2013/07/scholarly-misrepresentation

>Aslan’s repeated claims that he has “a Ph.D. in the history of religions” and that he is “a historian” are false. Nor is “professor of religions” what he does “for a living.” He is an associate professor in the Creative Writing program at the University of California, Riverside, where his terminal MFA in fiction from Iowa is his relevant academic credential. It appears he has taught some courses on Islam in the past, and he may do so now, moonlighting from his creative writing duties at Riverside. Aslan has been a busy popular writer, and he is certainly a tireless self-promoter, but he is nowhere known in the academic world as a scholar of the history of religion. And a scholarly historian of early Christianity? Nope.

https://www.firstthings.com/blogs/firstthoughts/2013/07/is-reza-aslan-off-the-hook

>Aslan reacts to the innocuous question “why would a Muslim write a book about Jesus” by turning defensive, arrogant, petulant, and condescending all at once. Instead of answering the question (as Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry says , a perfectly inoffensive one in itself), he recites, and in escalating fashion inflates, his scholarly credentials. He seems intent on browbeating his interviewer into accepting that he is a younger version of Peter Brown, Robert Louis Wilken, N.T. Wright, or John Dominic Crossan.
