Long post ahead, but I'd be very happy if you read it.

I was born into a Christian family, so naturally, I carry their beliefs. I believe that God exists, and I pray to him about very basic things. But beyond that, I have no connection with God. I might as well be an athiest.

And perhaps the biggest problem; I dislike Christianity in general. I don't like church culture. I don't like it at all. I don't like being with other christians either, because they're usually super sheltered and think the internet is made by satan. You know, the type of people who think you will go to hell for swearing.

But just recently, I discovered /christian/. Considering it's on 8chan, I knew there was no way this community was full of the kinds of christians you'd find at your good ol' church.

The first thing I notice is that people are using words like "Shit" and "Fuck" in their posts. Christians who don't think swearing is a sin? Now this is what I call a miracle.

This may be the best place for me to ask for advice. How do I get closer to God, despite my dislike for all these religeous things in general? And do any of you agree with me when it comes to my thoughts of modern day christians?

So, I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Some "Christians" are pretentious a–holes that think swears are worse than adultery. Those people aren't Christian at all and I can't stand their Pharisetic fakeness. However, some people are so legitimately sheltered, they have time to worry about swears since they don't have pron addiction, weight issues, and hate-filled bitterness at the NEET lot they've been dealt. I love those guys, they're super cool, and I watch myself carefully with them so as not to alienate them with my very real sin issues.

Don't be jealous of their righteousness, if it's legitimate. Aspire too it. Not swearing doesn't make us good, but swearing doesn't make us good either- and we're supposed to watch our tongues.

So, first check that your issue isn't that your conscience hasn't been so badly seared by sin that you can't stand to see people who aren't as corrupted as you.

I think people who have strayed from God come back with a deeper appreciation for Him than people who have never strayed.

Though I agree with you, I don't have any kind of connection with the other people at my church. Doesn't really help that the majority of them are two generations older than me though.

As for getting closer to God, I think its a more personal thing for people. Is your heart calling to do anything? If so, I'd check into that. The only real advice I could give you other than that is to try to read your Bible a little bit more.

Friend, do you actually believe God exists?

I am talking about "I am 100% sure God exists", not "I'm around a lot of people that believe God exists, so I guess I'm in the club"?

The first thing I notice is that God needs to justify things to you, instead of the other way around.

I would like some people to explain their reasoning behind swearing? Is it because they're typing it instead of saying.

By their fruits you shall recognize them, the christian culture is full of iniquity

Get over christ mate and return to the Father, the only and everlasting god, the very One that christ praised and was uplifted by to punish Israel for its sins

I used to be/still am like this, but you should recognize that they're critical of details because they're trying to achieve a higher standard, they're trying to help you. The internet is full of pornography and terrible vices and hugboxes. There was a Paul saying about when he was with weak people, he became weak, when he was with strong people, he became strong, it was something like that but i don't remember it completely, basically iron sharpens iron.

The biggest problem with the church is its walls. We are called to be of service to those around us - ALL of those around us. Self segregation - living only in our own bubble - is not good practice. For how can it proclaim the gospel? Live in, but don't be conformed to, the world.
