Islam is the religion of peace, because "islam" means peace, but not a peace among equals as we understand it in the West, no: it's a peace of submission, since "islam" can also be more accurately translated as "submission".
It always annoys me to see this historical arguments to legitimize certain actions against islam. Those arguments are not needed. Islam is an evil religion and should always be opposed. That's all the arguments and legitimacy you need.
