1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.

What if, when Paul said this, he actually meant it?

Mark 10:21

And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

What if Jesus wasn't cracking a joke here, but actually was telling us how we should live our lives?

Mark 10:29-30

Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

What if this 'bible' thing is actually real and what Jesus said is truly the word of God?

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

You may have accepted Jesus as our saviour, but have you accepted him as lord yet?

You can use money to facilitate trade without loving it, obsessing over it, and being greedy.

There are poor people with no money but who love money and are greedy and selfish and think that if they get tons of money it'll resolve all their problems and they can't comprehend how the rich can be unhappy, to them money is king yet they have none; on the other hand there are very wealthy folks who care little about their money and just use it pragmatically and charitably and understand that it is just a means to an end.

>What if this 'bible' thing is actually real and what Jesus said is truly the word of God?

>Go sell what you have and give to the poor

The point is to not be greedy and to rely on God as your foundation not money. Jesus told the rich man to part with his money because it had a strong hold on him, his advice wouldn't work on poor people who love money and are greedy but literally lack money. Such people would probably need to experience what having money is like so they understand it's limitations.

I dunno, the next verse Jesus says that how difficult it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Nothing says 'don't let desire for money rule your life' saying that too much money literally can bar you out of heaven.

>I dunno, the next verse Jesus says that how difficult it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

And the verse after that Jesus says with man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

just to add to this, I'm pretty sure Jesus is saying "if it's hard for a rich guy, imagine how hard it is for a poor guy." I think this is supported by the apostles response: "Who then can be saved?" So I don't think it's as much of a bash-the-rich quote as people make it out to be

Jesus is saying 'don't be a rich guy'. It's that simple.

That covetousness is root of all sins? Well, that it's true. Covetousness is root of all sin, be it by simple desire for temporal goods, for corruptible goods inordinately caused by our corrupted natrure or as just desire and love for money.

That Evangelical Counsels, works of supererogation are better to be done if we want to be perfect, as our Father is perfect?

That we are to place God as first?

I am Catholic, quod erat demonstrandum.

Exactly what do you mean by this?

>That we are to place God as first?

Absolutely. When we say God first, that means God before literally anything in our real lives.

Jewish doctrine at the time was that the materially wealthy would not have become that way if they were not righteous, because God would have cursed them. The rich were, therefore, thought to be the most righteous of all. In context of the surrounding verses, claiming that this literally means "being rich is a sin" demonstrates a level of willful ignorance usually reserved for academia and politics.

Evangelical Counsels, voluntary: poverty, chastity and obedience are not necessary for salvation, but are works of supererogation i.e. "payment beyond what is due or asked". They are meritorious, for they are united with merit with Christ and there will be reward for them but not are all able to do them (but they should at least partialy try)
