This was back in the Howard era. There were actually zero prosecutions for Job Agencies doing illegal shit back then, as it was enacting Howard's Divinely-granted will.

The first job agency I ever used made a whopping 200% margin on me. No, that's not a typo. I was getting $25/hr and they were charging the client $75/hr. Absolute fucking cunts.

Reminds me of the old trick where they'd advertise your dream position with great pay. You get the job. Just when you're about to start, you're told the position isn't "open" or "developed" yet, so in the meantime can you just do [shitkicker job] and when it's ready you'll slot right into it.

When I was 3rd Year Uni CompSci, and scoping out jerbs in IT, I XPT'd it down to Melbourne to crash at a friend's place so I could spend a fortnight seeing what could happen down there. Nothing came of it, though.

However, I got the story of how the mate's housemate, Jim, used to work for $25/hr doing inhouse Windows Help Desk stuff in a Hospital. But a IT-specific JA, CyberSource, came up to him, he signed on, and they gave him a two day FreeBSD course. The JA then flogged him back at the same hospital for $50/hr, and his Unix sysadminning was "phone up a guy back at CyberSource and he'll talk your through it". CyberSource were billing the hospital $200/hr for a full-time guy who did maybe one admin-thing a week.

Aussie ITers might remember CyberSource as major sponsors of S.A.G.E; there's a fucking pathetic reason behind why they had so much money to throw around. I reckoned Jim was a massive cunt for going along with the scamming of a Hospital, too.
