So now that Next is no longer a thing, it looks like we're just watching the board descend into nothingness. Let's try to restart things with a discussion: what are your Asatru-related plans for this year?

I'm planning on doing my first rune casting soon and building a decent altar.

Hotwheels let me post

I made three mighty oaths at Yuletide that I'm going to be focused on keeping to this year.

Two of them are personal, while one entails getting prepped for engaging in a Seidth/Shamanic experience during Yuletide 2016.

Other than that, just reading up on more Heathen lore, and keeping on keeping on.

Very nice.

As a side note, does anyone here (all 3 of us at this point) get in touch with their local kinships?

Sadly not on my part. The Heathens that I know of in my city are of the Wiccatru/New Age variety that congregates around a local New Age shop. And even kindreds that I've found that are an hour away or more are Heathens Against Hate tier. Plus, I'm going through college right now, so I'm not exactly in a financially stable enough position to just pack my things up and go wherever a Folkish kindred may be at the moment (but definitely a long term goal.)

I made a few oaths myself. One was to be a better man, another was to cut down on drinking, the third was to eat healthier.

Trying to start my own kindred here as well I do not know how it will work out though only other people that are interested are celtic pagans. But we'll see what happens.

Making another batch of mead too (A straight mead made with dark alfalfa honey). Also thinking about making some mead in bulk to sell felt like I honed my craft enough to make commercial batches.

Good luck to you on starting a kindred. I started one back when I was first getting into Heathenry and was naive and gullible. Things started out well, but eventually deteriorated due to poor boundaries on my part.

If there is any piece of advice that I wish to emphatically impart, it's this:

Have firm boundaries

Always keep in mind Robert Conquest's 2nd law of politics:

Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.

Root out or at least correct anyone with heavy Wiccan or Judeo-Christian baggage. Boldly declare your kindred Folkish and Right-wing from the get go to discourage leftist subversion. Be wary of even self-proclaimed "Centrists" or "Moderates" or "being beyond left and right" due to the tendency of such types to be nothing more than crypto-leftists.

Would you mind sharing how it went down?

Basically, as I said before, I was young and naive back then. I did not fully understand politics or where exactly I stood. I wasn't a hardcore SJW tier leftist, but I was basically a wishy washy Centrist/Moderate, which meant I de facto drank the mainstream left Kool-Aid.

The three other core members of the kindred I started were people I met in school. Two of them started out affably enough, but showed their true colors later. The third one I should've known better from the start.

The first two, when I first met them, were extremely friendly to the point they would practically offer the shirts off their back. A little too friendly I would later realize in retrospect. They turned out to be Narcissists. At first they would tell harmless "Big Fish Stories" that could be politely nodded to, but eventually those stories gave way to pathological lying that also entailed telling lies about others to get people to turn against each other.

They were also ex-Wiccans who still carried that baggage, and were also heavily into the SCA stuff. It was pretty obvious to me upon introspection that they were into Heathenry for the narcissistic image of being "Vikings" and "outsiders" and pissing off mommy and daddy. Also they claimed to be "Conservative" through all this.

I eventually got fed up with their pathological lying when it got to the point that it was affecting others, and confronted them on this three separate occassions, in which they just doubled down with more lies. After their third chance, I figured "three strikes" and kicked them to the curb.

The third one was a particularly charismatic narcissist, who fancied himself a Burroughs/Hunter S. Thompsonesque "psychonautical" user of substances. I bought his schtick for awhile, but eventually woke up to the fact that he was just a lost soul and a Hippie drug abuser. Things went south between us when I kicked the first two to the curb. He tried to bring others into the fold, who were just other fucking dirty hippies of various stripes with their Wiccan/pseudo-Buddhism/New Age admixture worldview horseshit baggage.

I reached a breaking point with his self-destructive tendencies (drug abuse, alcoholism, theft, etc.), and decided to lead an intervention for him. He just doubled down, and the other hippies he associated with turned against me.

The main lessons to take away are:

1. Be wary of people who are way too nice to you too soon. They are usually Narcissists trying to sink their psychological and emotional hooks into you as quickly as possible so that you find it all the more difficult to kick them out of your life when you wake up to their bullshit.

2. Be wary of ex-Wiccans and those who are a little too deep into SCA stuff. The ex-Wiccans tend to be those going through a rebellious "fuck you mom and dad!" phase, and can unwittingly carry over Wiccan worldview baggage into Heathenry. SCA enthusiasts in general are often more in love with the image of being "Vikings" then they are with the more esoteric and practical application of the Heathen worldview in the modern world. Not all ex-Wiccans and SCA types are bad, but should still merit extra screening due to the commonality of the characteristics outlined.

3. In addition to being young and naive, I literally started the aforementioned kindred mere months after first getting into Heathenry. Wait until you have some experience and maturity under your belt before starting a kindred.

And finally…

4. Just say no to Hippies.

Learn more about it. Always had an interest but it wasn't until recently that I seriously wanted to know more it and practice. All I've read so far is pic related, but I'm working on that.

Well shit, that's rough. Vetting for any organization is a tough job, especially when you are dependent on the founding members. It's a good lesson for any of us planning this.

Care to give spark notes for this?

I have encountered these types before and am a good judge of character. My close friends always refer to me when a new guy joins the fold because I can always read them sooner than others can. (I cannot even count how many times I have said "I told you so").

Also yeah SCA guys tend to love the image of Vikings being that they think they fucked and partied all the time. I had these guys in my viking reenactment group which caused me to drop the fucking group. I just wanted to fight and have some friends to camp and drink with. These assholes wanted some Wiccatru orgies and shit.

I drop people out of my life more frequently than others because of this. Thanks for the advice though.

I went out to the woods when the first snow fell and thought about what I want to do this year. It was one of the most relaxing things I have done in quite some time. The tranquility of the forest really gets to one, especially with the snow.

I want to repeat this during the change from season to season this year, going out to the woods, maybe carve and cast runes and meditate on their meaning.
