What are y'all planning on doing for Yuletide?

Yuletime starts sunset on the 22nd this year, and is of course the longest night of the year for the NH, and it lasts twelve days.

My plans are hobby based, rather than being solidified into traditions of their own rights.

First, I will do astronomy on the night of the solstice. I always bake something sweet on my holidays, but I also intend to make some savory meals based on meats I've never eaten like Duck, Lamb, and Cabrito. I will be putting the most effort into the 24 hour period between the solstice sunset and the following sunset, so effectively two days of celebration there.

I would like to take up archery & archery hunting this year, a plan to go on a hunt on the final days of Yule, which will constitute a lot of effort as well. Many hours and quite possibly an unsuccessful hunt or else even more work in preparing my prey for a meal.

Filling up the intervening time with meaningful tradition is a challenge, though. We have a Yule Moon which happens to fall on the 25th this year, but I have mixed feelings about putting in a lot of effort on the christcuck high holiday. But on the other hand you can't just surrender part of Yuletime to them.

Any one else working on some dank traditions? I think a challenge for most pagans is that we don't live in communities of other pagans with whom to share our traditions so our religious activities take on a reclusive and private nature which should be fought against. Let's light up the season of darkness by sharing our traditions with each other.

Happy Yuletide!

If you don't have a decent multitool/swiss-army-knife I recommend getting one but it's not necessary; a junk pocketknife can do a lot of things especially the ones with saws.

As to wood: I've never made a set of runs but my hammer pendant came from a tree in my backyard.

I still have half of the piece and I plan on making a hammer pendant for my friend who wears a metal one It's because he's a metal head though, I can't say much about his beliefs and he does go to church but I think there's still hope to make him folkish yet

Mostly rest and introspection. I'm celebrating Yuletide from the 22nd until Sacrifice Day on January the 2nd (to make it a proper 12 days of Yuletide.)

I'm going to open with a Mother's Night ritual on the 22nd to kick things off.

A lot of time will be spent reading up on some Heathen books I've been meaning to get to, as well as doing more self-directed study in my career of choice.

I'll also indulge in some entertainment that I haven't been able to during the work year ( like vidya, etc.)

Sacrifices will consist of beers, meads and specific gifts to the gods and goddesses. (Usually I give jewelry to Freya, a weapon to Odin, and a bottle of high quality whiskey to Thor. Though I have also sacrificed my own artwork in tribute to them with good results.)

Also thought about engaging in a psychotropic based ritual during this period, but will probably wait till next year.

There's gotta be some outdoor parks where you are. Though obviously a "New York Central Park" type of park ain't gonna cut it.

There are a couple of parks in my city that have nature trails that bend the line between public park and outright wilderness. Those are the places to seek out in your position. That, or a nearby national forest reserve of some sort. Or, if you're particularly adventurous, you can go driving around looking for secret outdoor places off the beaten path.

Plus, during the dark of winter, you'll more than likely have such places to yourself due to most people not caring for the cold.

I'd start with this first:

http://www.amazon.com/Norse-Myths-Pantheon-Folklore-Library/dp/0394748468/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449870959&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=kevn+crossly+holland+the+norse+myths

It's flawed; the cosmology explanation at the beginning is obsolete, but you're not here for that.

What it offers is an entertaining and easy to digest prose retelling of the Norse myths from the Prose and Poetic Edda. It gives you a basic overview that will allow a more smooth transition to these:

http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Edda-Lee-M-Hollander/dp/0292764995/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449871190&sr=8-1&keywords=poetic+edda

http://www.amazon.com/Edda-Everymans-Library-Snorri-Sturluson/dp/0460876163/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1449871220&sr=8-3&keywords=prose+edda

There are many different versions that emphasis different qualities (i.e. poetic rhythm over precise translation accuracy, etc.) but these are versions a lot of people start off and are fine with. You can explore more versions on your own if you wish.

After that, you can take in a good sizable chunk of the Sagas to get a picture of society and life during those times interspersed with local mythology:

http://www.amazon.com/Sagas-Icelanders-Penguin-Classics-Deluxe/dp/0141000031/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449871449&sr=8-1&keywords=the+icelandic+sagas

There are many more sagas, but this will give you more than enough of a taste of them in general.

In addition, the following will give you a comprehensive lowdown and terms to compliment what you have read already:

http://www.amazon.com/Myths-Northern-Europe-Ellis-Davidson/dp/0140136274/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1449871917&sr=1-1&keywords=gods+and+myths+of+northern+europe

http://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Northern-Mythology-Rudolf-Simek/dp/0859915131/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449871557&sr=8-1&keywords=a+dictionary+of+northern+mythology

And will also give you a good transition to the next phase: now that you've digested a sizable chunk of the primary myths, it's time to go deeper into the worldview of the Germanic people:

http://www.amazon.com/Germanization-Early-Medieval-Christianity-Sociohistorical/dp/0195104668/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449871664&sr=8-1&keywords=the+germanization+of+early+medieval+christianity

http://heathengods.com/library/bil_linzie/

http://www.angelfire.com/nm/seidhman/reincarnation2.pdf

http://www.angelfire.com/nm/seidhman/reconstruction-c.pdf

http://www.heathengods.com/library/road_to_hel/index.htm

http://www.heathengods.com/library/culture_of_the_teutons/index.htm

The aforementioned works will begin to explain to you the Heathen worldview beyond the typical surface level interpretations of the myths.

I think the above oughtta be more than enough to get someone started who is starting from square one. After all of these, you can pretty much go where to wish, be it Beowulf, the Nibulunglied or wherever:

Anecdotally, I think Thor would be cool with any alcohol that is high quality and has a traditionally masculine character.

Plus he's a god who is associated with the working class (though him being a god and all, I wouldn't take a chance with Bud or PBR or Milwaukee's Best), so I think a good strong beer (like Warsteiner or a Sam Adams lager) or whiskey (like Maker's Mark or Rebel Yell), or even potent moonshine oughtta please him.

At midnight, I went to the shore of the half-frozen lake near my house, prayed to the gods and my ancestors, and poured out a shot of rum for each of them, and then set another shot on fire.

It felt a little clumsy to speak out loud into the frozen air, but words came. I thanked Freyja for her guidance, my ancestors for the strength they gave me and for waking me up, and I thanked vili for helping whites overcome their problems with intellect and thor for helping us overcome problems with strength, and thanked them all for giving us the tools so that we'd never have to rely on miracle and luck to save us.

I'll do something at sunrise too.

I went outside and offered a horn of mead to Odin tonight mixed with my blood. The mead I made myself one year ago and spiced with Hazelnuts I drank half then poured the rest into the roots of the largest tree I could find (this tree also had many branches as well). I then got drunk as fuck. I plan on offering a blot on the 25th since we get a full moon and one more on New year's eve all with the same mead I brewed. I also plan on reading the havamal during the days of Yule

Held a private Blot and Sumbel at the altar in my room. Invoked the gods, goddesses, spirits and ancestors, and performed toasts, boasts and prayer as I made offerings of beer, oatmeal and crackers.

Spent the rest of the night reading Voluspa, Havamal, and Vafthrudnismal; after which I just sat in quiet contemplation and introspection as I watched the Yule candle burn through the night. My cat came into my room later, and judging by her purring and restfulness, things appeared to have went well.

At sunrise, went outside, praised the gods, and left my offerings, and took in the day. Shortly after I proceeded to crash. Overall a very satisfying experience.

Planning on having another vigil for Yuletide Eve, where I will offer an edible pork product of some sort, and swear my oaths for the new year.

On Sacrifice Day will be the third and final vigil, and when I will offer mead and specific gifts to the gods and goddesses.

The celebration me and a pagan friend held was pretty great. We spent the three days prior to the solstice chopping down trees and gathering wood, then invited a bunch of people over for a bonfire that burned bright all night. An axe-throwing competition was held. Then at dinner we toasted to the gods and drank home-brewed elderberry mead and cooked wild boar meat over the fire (one of the best meals Ive ever had). We told stories and conversed deeply as the night went on. After things quieted down and some people went to sleep (we had tents set up) I stayed up all night to keep the fire going. After a while I began to have some serious hallucinations, which had never happened before. In the morning we all watched the sun rise, said a sober goodbye, and disbanded.

Sorry for the essay, it was just quite a night.

Maybe some of you remember me, I am the edgelord who cut himself during the bloodmoon and had an intense time walking to the spot I picked.

This time I was finished around 3:33 AM (I only know because I found a screenshot of my phone the day after that). I went to the same spot again, only it was much brighter outside so it was much less "scary". I still held my bottle of mead like a club (lol) but that might be because I was already quite drunk after visiting birthday party.

I was equipped with 3 band aids, a Swiss army knife, a torch (the electric kind, English sucks) even though I didn't need it, a bottle of mead I bought at a Christmas market and 2 coins (silver form the German Empire, 1 of then I carry around all the time, the other only at special occasions. I need one more).

When I reached my spot, I faced one direction and started talking, Normally I'd pick 3 gods I'd address (usually the same too), but this time I was quite emotional (tears were shed due to me having a niece and my land being overrun by immigrants) and talked to all of those who would listen. At the moment I though that it might be a good idea, as I couldn't afford to be picky and, so I thought at that moment, neither could those who would be willing to listen to me.

Nothing rhymed in my speech as I'm unfortunately an awful poet and everything was improvised. When I thought I made my point, I opened the bottle, took 9 sips and spilled the rest on the ground near a tree. After that I cut my left middle finger at the top and spilled a few drops of blood on the ground and headed back straight into my bed.

Sorry for the kind of long text, but I also write this partially for me.

My reasoning is as follows:

I share the blood with all of my forebears. It connects all of them with each other and with me. The mead was intended for them, so I spilled them with it. I didn't mix them, but I might I might do that the next time as think it's a good idea.

It also is a little challenge, at least for me. For cutting oneself, you need to overcome some hesitation. It's the same with turning on the cold water in a shower for example.

>>9129

>Stollen

Now that's interesting and I never considered. I mean really interesting. It is usually said, that the Stollen is representing the baby Jesus, the powdered sugar being the cloth it is wrapped in.

Considering the whole story evolving around birth was hijacked by Christians, maybe one can assume this also was the case with the Stollen? Anyway, it's great idea I think. You basically offered something representing a Baby

So my cousin (who is a flaming homosexual degenerate) is apparently bringing his gay lover to Yule eve this year. I just now was informed of this, and that's only because i asked around on my own accord (apparently no one bothered to tell me beforehand because they think i'm too "bigoted" aka redpilled). The guy doesn't belong to the family at all and i'm asking myself whether he doesn't have a family on his own or something. What the fuck really

He was "ostensibly" invited to come by my grandmother (she's hosting the "christmas" eve family gathering each year) which is real fucking paradoxical seeing as she was the one who also cried out of despair when my faggot cousin came out of the closet at the lunch table some time back.

I'm so fucking pissed off. Seriously thinking about skipping christmas eve altogether this year because of this, this is like the final straw. My entire family consists of nothing but neurotical liberals, marxists and homosexuals and if they now openly start incoorporating this kind of sick diseased jew shit into our pagan greenpilled traditions then i don't want to be part of it anymore to be quite FUCKING honest…

Good news fellow greenpilled fuckers, earlier today i spoke with my grandmom and among other things she told me that she wasn't even the one who invited the twink to come on christmas eve. So my gaslighting drunkard mom basically lied to me when she claimed that she was the one who invited him to come on Yule eve lel.

I also told her that i can't tolerate this due to my religious/moral beliefs and shit. My grandmother for her part basically only tolerates the faggot because she fears that my gay cousin won't speak with her anymore (she hates that he's gay ofc) if she forbids his gay lover to come aswell. Apparently it was said degenerate cousin of mine who overtoppled her and claimed he's just going to bring the twink on that day without even asking for permission beforehand. What a cunt lel

I made it very fucking clear though that i will turn around and leave on the fucking spot if they do any kissing/fondling or any other reference whatsoever to their homo degeneracy during the Yule eve. I told her that i had originally planned to boycott it altogether since it's supposed to be the most sacred and greenpilled night of the year by far but she bargained and explained said red lines to me, convincing me to come after all in the end.

She basically agreed with me on everything and concurred that it's degenerate and against nature, and she also openly recognized that it's because of the kike media pushing this filth that the assorted degenerates feel empowered enough to shove their abnormal sexual practices into the face of everyone they meet so they can feel "brave". I told her we just have to wait for "better times" to come so that homo degeneracy will be denormalized and shunned again in the mainstream as it should be. She also said that my granddad wouldn't stand for it either. She's basically semi-redpilled (at least in private, she was raised devout lutheran) but sometimes it looks like she can't make up her mind properly and just goes with what is the most opportune thing for her to do at the moment in regards to the person she's currently talking with.

Anyways i'm confident she will succesfully be able to contain and thwart the planned degeneracy on Yule eve since she is now also aware of how vehementy i'm opposed to it. I guess there's still some hope left in this sad husk of a family after all

Having no practicing heathens anywhere near me I focus more on the shamanistic elements of our animist ways. I have made a peace with a local land spirit who runs with a small herd of deer down through the edges of town and will make a neighborly offering to it.

I will also leave a seat at the table for Frau Perchta and make old world German foods. I have no chimney so a video of a fireplace is going to have to serve as my yule log.

I will give a small, polite blot to Freyja and remember the wild boar offerings to her of ages gone by as I dig into my ham. As night draws on I will work more on my homespun runecraft, an expression of seidr, in an attempt to better manipulate wyrd into a more beneficial and healthy year for my family.

I will participate in my inherited orlog by finishing the day invoking my beloved dead, and toasting the unknown multitudes of my deep ancestry.

If you haven't brewed it yourself than there is no point in the sacrifice.

Gifts have meaning because of the thought that went into the selection of the specific gift for the specific recipient and because of the work that you put into making the gift.

Just get shitfaced af and honor all of 'em at the same time (preferably innawoods with a celebratory yule campfire or smth) fambrino

To those who want carve runes:

> Carve on sticks or slices of wood

> Ask the tree first if you can take one of it's branches.

I don't know how this works or if this is even necessary, use your intuition for this.

I don't see anything wrong with it, perhaps the tree will give you a notion on what branch you can even take.

> Don't carve them with metal

Our ancestors seemed to like riddles and unusual ways to do things.

One possibility is to burn runes into the wood, I used a stone I brought home from a holiday in the mountains (unsharpened).

> Sing to the runes while carving them

The vibrations resonating with you and you passing this energy into the runes will awaken them.

I also whisper th name of the rune I'm about to carve (and imagine to conduct energy into it, giving birth to it.

When done carving one rune, I also whisper the rune's name in the same manner.

Your intent could be more powerful than you know, even if you don't see it

> Stain each rune with a drop of blood

Blood isn't just for satanists or some shit like that, blood is a very potent liquid that can assume many forms, or help transition things into that form.

Use blood with caution, it is neutral at first but can be turned into something that will work for or against you.

> Carve them rune by rune, give every rune your attention and care for them when you carve them.

You're not a machine manipulating wood or stone, you're a sentient being that gives life to one of the most ancient symbols known to our people

> Keep them protected in something like a bag

I don't know why wiccans and similar fags keep them in black bags. I keep mine in a linen, white bag closed with white cotton string. These organic linen have always worked better for protection for me. (black is the color of for example the earth, I'm not saying black is an inherently 'bad' color, It just doesn't work for me for protective functions)

Black seems to attract energies I don't know how to manage (yet), white linen always worked as a something protective to keep spirits/entities with disruptive influences.

Good luck to any anons who delve into the runes, they are mysterious and the ones I carved seem very potent.

And good Yule, Yule is on the 21st this year. Make Yuletide a worthy 12 day period.

For newfags, see >>8957 for inspiration (again, intent and will are key to what you do, the exact knowledge of the rituals has mostly been eradicated and forgotten). Wiccans tend to do "whatever feels right", don't fall for that bullshit and research / read before you do something if you can.

>>9119

> what is the precedent for sacrificing one's own blood independent of this context?

I can't give you a specific meaning to this, I'll research the topic in the future for sure.

However I can tell you that Odin/Wotan sacrificed himself to himself, which is an interesting analogy.

What did /asatru/ receive as gifts this year that are related to this board?

I got this book that I asked for. Other translations are floating around as a pdf but I prefer reading on paper because it's not as tiring on the eyes. Plus I came across the author first on YouTube as he some good videos on Old Norse as a language, so it got me interested in his translations.

Here is the first paragraph in three different translations:

William Morris’s and Eirikr Magnusson’s translation:

“HERE BEGINS THE TALE, and tells of a man who was named Sigi, and called of men the son of Odin; another man withal is told of in the tale, hight Skadi, a great man and mighty of his hands; yet was Sigi the mightier and the higher of kin, according to the speech of men of that time. Now Skadi had a thrall with whom the story must deal somewhat, Bredi by name, who was called after that work which he had to do; in prowess and might of hand he was equal to men who were held more worthy, yea, and better than some thereof.”

R. G. Finch’s translation:

The tale begins here and tells of a man called Sigi who was said to be the son of Odin.¹ Another man features in the story, and his name was Skadi.² He was powerful and important, but, even so, Sigi was the more powerful of the two, and the higher born, as people said at that time.

Jackson Crawford’s translation:

Here begins the story of Sigi, who was said to be a son of Óđin. Another man named Skađi was also involved in this story. He was powerful and considered a great man, though between the two Sigi was more powerful and considered to be from a better family, according to the opinion of the time.

There should be a comma after "between the two" so I'm concerned about how his English will be, but I like his translation as it's more natural to read and he keeps the accent marks.

Not specifically replying to anyone, but I figure it would be better not to make a new thread just for this:

https://www.brutenorse.com/blog/2017/12/norse-yuletide-sacrifices-had-almost.html

Solid article about the timing of Yule in reference to the lunisolar calendar used by Germanic peoples before adopting christianity and to mentions of Yule in source material, I'd recommend giving it a read.

tl;dr, Yule is two months long, these months roughly coincide with December and January but not exactly since they're defined by actual lunar cycles ("month" derives from the proto-Germanic word for "moon"), and the main feast of Yule probably took place on the full moon in the second of these two moons, which is generally going to be mid January though this will move a bit each year.
