>>3990People turn to Asatru because they know more about it than they do about their own pagan roots. Maybe if they knew more about their heritage they wouldn't do this but instead would proudly represent their own cultures. E.g I am south European (Italian) myself and have no idea about what my pagan heritage may be or how I could find out more about it and maybe find a similar community like this one that represents my heritage.
Tbh I feel like one of those fucking 'otherkins' due to the stigma of paganism and the fact that I seemingly can't fit into this group either. I can see how people would try to assimilate with Asatru. It's for the same reason people call themselves LBGT: because they're trying to find their place and being part of the group gives them sort form of identity which they can use to prop up their ego. Also the liberal attitude of "no, it's fine you can be whatever you want to be" really doesn't help. The sad thing is those liberal attitudes are coming from people who are also unsure but have found other people who are unsure and have become defensive in how unsure they are of themselves, so much so that it becomes an outward movement to convert others, which is something you can see here.
