Thoughts? I don't think what we know about specifically German paganism is enough to contend as a real religion. Platonic metaphysics are the perfect entry point into 'getting' religion in itself (there exists divinity beyond the material, mundane senses). How to syncretize Neo-Platonist theology with Germanic themes? I don't know. Discuss.

That already happened centuries ago but the Christian authorities destroyed all that work, I guess you could rebuild it. His name was Georgius Gemistus who was called Plethon and he attended the Council of Florence to bring together the Western and Eastern Churches. Plethon personally professed faith in Zeus the afflicter and Poseidon the reorderer.

"And when I asked Plethon, “Christ’s or Muhammad’s?,” he said, “Neither; but it will not differ much from ancient paganism.” I was so shocked by these words that I hated him ever after and feared him like a poisonous viper, and I could no longer bear to see or hear him." -George Trebizond

And then a year after Plethon's death Constantinople fell because Christians let jews within the walls. Its all so tiresome.

I have faith we have everything we need but go ahead and prove me wrong.

I've often thought about this myself. It seems as though Neoplatonism is functionally identical to the Hindu school of Advaita Vedanta; being that Vedic Hinduism and Heathenry share a common PIE heritage, that might be a good place to start.

Also, STJ has a really good video on the Indo-European conception of reincarnation and the tripartite soul, wherein he references Sallust, a late Neoplatonist. (Vid related.)

And here is the text he discusses, iirc.

It wasn't like there was really a unified pagan religion to begin with. Beliefs and practices varied from land to land and time to time. People like Snorri Sturulson were already familiar with Greek studies as well so it's not like there is a lost knowledge scenario here, as in a Plato equivalent in Germanic lands. Not that there is anything wrong with Plato, but you sound like you're chasing shadows. Germanic paganism was more about magic and spirits than being a Christian-style book-based philosophy and history. The things lost to time were likely just witchcraft techniques and some missing folklore. So I don't see the point in forcing them together when you can study both Norse mythology and classical Greek philosophy on their own. Taking something Greek and swapping out the gods for different gods is basically just Universalism.
