(A more literal translation would be “gaining experience of the ancestral sovereign gods.”) Asatru is a name given to the religion of the Norsemen, but we use this term to include the spiritual worldview of all the Germanic peoples, not just the Scandinavians.

The afterlife isn't important. Christianity is a death cult so it's main concern is with the afterlife, but in Heathenry the the family, the tribe and the nation is what matters, even after you're dead.

But as a topic of interest, the afterlife:

If you die heroically abroad, you might go to Valhöll or Fólkvang.

If you die at sea you'll go to Ægir's hall.

If your a peace of shit outlaw or get bogged you'll end up on Náströnd.

If you die unremarkably you'll go to hel (which isn't a bad place).

But that's your "outer soul", your "body soul" stays in the grave as long as you exist. don't ask the soul is a difficult subject and i don't want to write about

Pretty much this. You are not a soul trapped in meat, you are a whole being that is pretty much disintegrated when you die. Parts of you go to different places.

Your body rots away and is returned to the earth.

Your consciousness goes on to another realm, the nature of which is dependent on several factors… or it can stick around earth for awhile.
