A wizard is never late. Nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to.

>Hollywood movie directed by a man whose claim to fame is directing a Finnish version of "The Hangover", a movie about a skinhead who falls in love with a former coalburner, and the Tom of Finland movie.

I hadn't even heard of this until I saw the poster for it the other day. Were you guys aware of this and just ignoring it because you knew it would be shit?

There's potential for hilariously subversive implications, but I doubt the movie will be anything but bland and boring, like almost all biographical flicks.

Has anyone actually seen it?

Yes but I don't see how that is related to this thread.

I only began seeing commercials for it about a week ago. It looks shitty and they try waaaaay too hard in them to go, "See! See! Tolkien, you know, the Lord of The Rings guy! Fiery CGI (that probably barely shows up in the movie to be fair) and shit!"

I'll still probably torrent it once it comes out on Blu-Ray, though.

I think a relevant place to talk about having seen the film would be a thread about the film.

Saw it. It's about JRRT reflecting on his life while in the trenches of WWI. Some of the shots are kino as heck, I could take a couple of stills from this movie and frame them on my wall.

Edith is cute, but pushy.

The best parts are him screwing around with his friends in the TCBS.

Good flick, but little /arda/ unless you're curious about how he discussed his ideas when they were in their infancy.

Absolute state of Finland. The Tolkien family make it clean that they didn't want to be associated with that atrocity.

Tolkien's heirs were right to disapprove of plodding biopic: he deserves better

While Tolkien’s school days certainly had an effect on the writer he would become, his experience of war and comradeship was surely more than just a beastly and brutish episode in his overall development. Tolkien’s heirs made clear before the film arrived that they disapproved of it and they were right: he deserves better.
