It was $2,000 a month, but I talked the jew down to $1,600 because of the roaches and rats and it didn't come with a fridge...

I don't own a gun and I live in Albuquerque, ffs. Random people don't get shot as much as you think. In 2017 there were 290 murders total in NYC. NYC has a population of 8.5 million. Let's say that one out of every 10 shootings ends in a fatality, so in the worst case, that would be 2,900 shootings in New York. And the majority of those shootings are gang-related, so let's cut that by 60%. 1,160.
Now, if we assume all the shootings in NYC are only in the bornx, which has a population of 1.5 million, you have a .07% chance of being shot in a given year.
Not all murders are in the bronx and the instances of gang-related and even drug-related shootings is likely significantly higher. You don't even have to deal with the people around you, all you have to do is go to work until you can actually afford a better place and not complain about it

In a tiny, poor village in Thailand, there lives a brother and sister sharing a single bed in a single room, as they are so poor.
Dum Luk says to his sister Dum Ho, "Today, I will go to the city and find work, so I can feed us!"
Later that evening Luk comes home, and asks his sister if he can borrow some of her clothes, and some of her make-up.
"What are you thinking?" asks Ho.
"For rent money," her brother replies, "Luk be a lady tonight."

It's absolutely nothing of what you're looking for. But her books are thicker than bibles and more of a chore to read.
It'll make whatever menial task you're doing fun and exhilarating by comparison. You'll want to drown out the noise of the audio book with whatever else it is you're doing.
Reading them makes you want to tear your eyes out, and listening to them on audio will actually take several attempts to even take it all in.
If you ever do read an Ayn Rand novel, make sure to never start with Atlas because you'll never want to pick up one of her books again.
