While there is some sort of acceptance these days, Japan is still generally conservative regarding gays. There's some anime shows with lots of gay content but it tends to be very tropey and kinda not real - it's either comedic, BL/Yuri, or this sort of chaste handholding. But a realistically depicted romance between two people of the same sex is rare. Yuri on ICE is one recent example where they actually pulled it off, but even then they couldn't show a kiss, couldn't make it blatant. Men tend to love f/f gay while women tend more towards m/m gay in their ships. I suppose this might be because if you're not gay yourself, a ship between two people neither of which you can relate to or feel attracted to feels kinda distant?
