The animation CC2 and Arcsys did with 3d models was SHITLOADS UPON SHITLOADS of rigging points attached to a few sets of polygons at a time. Normally rigging a 3d model doesn't take more than 1 hour max for a competent 3d animator, but these models are a different story. Now you're asking why the anime industry won't do this, when they're using CGI as a fucking shortcut?
This is why CGI pisses me off, it takes less effort on average since most faggots in the industry, both west and east, use it as a lazy shortcut. There are exceptions of course, and obviously both skills done at beyond competent calibers take different skills in the arts, with 2d being line art, and 3d being sculpting. But for the most part, CG is seen as the shortcut route and for the most part that's why it's fucking garbage.

It's a very likely chance given said fuckers' Twitter tantrums and repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot. They seriously overestimate their worth as VAs. Japan replaced Bulma's original VA when she tragically passed away recently; short of you playing them side by side, you can't tell the difference. If they want to replace them, they can and will find a VA who is similar sounding and who can do a good of a job as them.
Obviously, getting sued isn't very healthy for any company, but it's ultimately losing fish. What is really concerning (for Funimation) is they may lose their fishing rod. Regarding license acquirement, Funimation has been struggling for awhile now. Most of the big money makers series seem to be going to LA (Hunter x Hunter, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, One Punch Man, etc.), while Funimation only has access to B-Series and whatever scraps are leftover. Even when they get a large license, it sometimes just can't catch on in the west (namely One Piece). However, they currently have two big money-makers on their hands: Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia. My Hero does make money, but it's pretty clear that well will dry up after the manga and anime end. Dragon Ball however is an evergreen series that will always make very good money.
Of course, keeping Dragon Ball is fully dependant on keeping friends with Toei so they renew the license. It's unlikely that Gen Fukunaga's uncle is still a large head at Toei, so it really seems like they may want to get Funimation out of the picture. Toonami Asia ended up getting a separate English dub from Bang Zoom! in LA, so it's pretty evident that Toei wouldn't necessarily mind giving the license to another company. However, the thing that seems to keep Funimation in the game is their cast. For many, Schemmel is Goku, Sabat is Vegeta, Hebert is Gohan, and so on and so forward. Toei is aware that replacing these actors would inevitably cause major controversy, so that creates some real leverage. However, this lawsuit could really be the excuse Toei needed to justify letting go some of the cast. From a PR perspective, losing a defamation lawsuit against a fellow cast member would be a reasonable excuse to force Funimation to scrap Schemmel or Sabat. Losing these actors could potentially be the final nail in the coffin to Funimation's ability to protect Dragon Ball.
Without Dragon Ball, there's basically no way that Funimation could remain in business for a long term. Licenses aren't cheap and neither is hiring a full staff to dub and distribute said licenses. Likewise, Funimation's Glassdoor reviews doesn't paint the picture of a management staff that can properly adjust the company to Dragon Ball's loss. Regarding Dragon Ball's potentially Funimationless future, odds are a LA based company will pick up the license at a much lower operating cost. Assuming they don't take a scorched earth approach to casting, there's a decent chance that a handful Funimation actors would reprise their role in the new dub (probably those based in LA, like Kyle Hebert). This could be good for Vic, as it's basically the only way that he gets his Broly role back unless he gets it back as part of an out-of-court settlement with Funimation. Things will especially look up for him if Bang Zoom! gets the rights back, as they seem to have no issue with him keeping his role as Rohan in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
I've been told and have seen a few other quotes around that Yu Yu Hakusho's dub script is quite terrible because of Justin Cook's influence and was definitely done around the time Funimation was doing some shit that was reminiscent of what 4KIDS and Saban did in their heyday. I mean, they did the same thing to Dragon Ball Z 's original dub script as well at about the same time that they didn't properly dub/translate until years later. So there's already proof that long before the SJW takeover that Funimation has done some questionable localization even if that was basically the norm for anime distributors to do at the time.
So if Funimation indeed goes the way of 4KIDS, this was a bad seed that had been planted since the very beginning of Funimation's existence, yes? It was just a matter of time before their bad decisions came back to bite them in the ass? I will laugh if it does because it's possible that Funi will become a laughing stock and people will make joke dubs of newer anime as though Funimation would've done them.
TL;DR: This lawsuit may give Toei the excuse to take back the Dragon Ball license, which may end up causing Funimation to implode on itself.

They lost their one brand and foundation that consistently makes money and has longevity.
