Yeah this is actually pretty annoying. What is even with this lizard plot? This could be like a Death Note type show where it's entirely motivated by the MC's ego. Where this MC is using his servants to run all sorts of ops to frame him as a god and the major conflict is maintaining that charade while weaker players who were also trapped in the game try an expose him. They were even setting this up or so i thought. But it just keeps going off the rails. Like we barely know any of these characters and they just keep introducing more and more. The lizards suck and you would think the whole show is about them if you didn't watch S1.

There is always some autist that whines up a shitstorm in the release threads because it isn't exactly what he wants. It is a character study in a well meaning lonely Japanese man slowly losing his humanity in a vain attempt to hold on to the only humanity and warmth in his life. It has a fair amount of humor, some interesting stories, a lot of inhumanity.
A big problem I have heard from people coming into it is that all these characters get introduced with huge backgrounds just to die. It's a little different when you have to wait forever between releases. I can see how some books, like the two that are being adapted for the second half of this season, that are just huge chunks of exposition, character building, and establishing backstories could feel like that. Take it slowly and try to pace yourself to one book a month unless it really gets you going and you want to dive in.
Also, the first three books were lazily machine translated from Chinese iirc. I thjnk someone went and redid them so if you are downloading a pdf set and the first book reads really weird, look for another copy of the first three.
